MEXICO - A Few of My Favorite Things
by Audrey Westby

15-hour bus rides across Texas
Dating advice from Hugo
Petting stray dogs
Holding the one stray cat you see all week
Singing and dancing to bless meals
Wonderfully authentic Mexican food
Skip's jar of peanut butter
Jackie up and ready with coffee made
Seeing Dave and Rachel dressed as mimes
Driving on roads with potholes
that could compete with craters
The loudest snoring you will ever hear
Card games before bed
Suave Cremas!
Vanilla from the flea market...
Shoveling cement and dirt
until you can't stand up straight
without moaning
Losing count of wheelbarrows of dirt
Watching an enthusiastic five-year-old shovel beside you
Cinderblock assembly lines
Hearing the words "Mas agua"
Going to bed exhausted but grinning
Passing out Mardi Gras beads and coloring books
to the most excited kids in the world
Getting beat in soccer
by every kid in the neighborhood
Learning Spanish from a 10-year-old girl
with a baby brother always on her hip
Tickling children to make them smile
Getting called "gringo"
Not speaking a word of Spanish
but communicating with smiles, hugs, and hand motions
Worshipping the same God in two languages
Receiving a token of appreciation from those with nothing
Standing in a completed house
you literally built from the ground up
Giving a family a place they are proud
to call "home"
Crying with the homeowner
during the house dedication
And not wanting to say goodbye
at the end of the week.
Maybe we're all crazy
for going back year after year,
but you go once and you get it.

New Sermon Series
"That Was Then. This Is Now.
What Is Next?"
What makes Noel Church the phenomenal presence that it is? What events shaped the foundation of this congregation that has come up through the ashes time and again? Celebrate our triumphs, learn from our mistakes, then buckle your seatbelt as we head off into the future-a future filled with possibilities, promise, and you, the people who make up this great church we call Noel.
In this current series of sermons, Rev. Flint Shea takes us on a journey that is Noel, past, present, and future.
October 17: "That Was Then"
October 24: "This Is Now"
October 31: "What Is Next?"
November 7: "Now It's Your Turn"
November 14: "Are You In?"
November 21: "The Great Thanksgiving"
Childcare provided Sunday mornings in our state-of-the-art child-care center at no charge.
A CD of the entire sermon series will be available in the church office when the series is complete. Call 221-5207.

2ND ANNUAL SHREVEPORT-BOSSIER CROP WALKSunday, October24, 3:00 p.m. Noel is one of the proud sponsors of The CROP Walk, a national event held in communities around the country to raise funds and awareness of the issues of hunger and poverty (CROP stands for Communities Responding to Overcoming Poverty). The walk will be 3 miles long beginning at Noel and winding through the Highland neighborhood. To participate, pick up a CROP walk registration form from the Welcome Center or at the church office. This is a great activity for a family, Sunday school class, or small group to do together. Proceeds from the walk benefit the NW La. For more information, contact Rachel Scott at 797-8721 or Betsy Ebarb at 868-7775, or go to the walk's website, www.sbcropwalk.com.

GREATER GIFT MARKET, On Saturday, October 30, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. This is a great opportunity to get a head start on the holiday season and to buy gifts that support sustainable, fair-trade markets both in our community and around the world. Noel's Gym will be transformed into a one-stop gift shop featuring a variety of fair trade merchandise. These artisans have been paid a fair price to produce their goods, and each purchase helps them to become more self-sufficient. We will feature a large selection of beautiful high-quality jewelry, purses, needlework, bath and body items, toys, holiday ornaments, and other handcrafts, as well as coffees, teas, and chocolates from Ten Thousand Villages, SERRV, and Bead For Life. In addition, there will be art and jewelry available from local artists in our community and alternative gift items from our own Food Pantry. Volunteers are needed to help the day of the market, the day before market for inventory and set-up, and the day after for inventory and clean-up.
