"A Scout Is Reverent"

"A Scout is Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean, and Reverent."
                                                                       The Scout Law

reverent \'rev-rənt, '\ adj. - deeply respectful

"Keep the commandments of the Lord your God, walking in obedience and being reverent to him."             - Deuteronomy 8:6

Just a few years ago, our family had the honor and privilege of being in Washington, D.C. on the fourth of July.  That evening, we rode the Metro into the city, walked to the "mall" where the Washington Monument towers over the city, spread out a blanket on the grass, and waited excitedly for the fireworks.  The news channel reported the next morning that an estimated 500,000 people attended the magnificent display.  Most everyone sat quietly as we all were overcome with a sense of awe at the electrifying display of light and sound.  To be caught up in that moment felt almost sacred.

But there were a few people who weren't so respectful.  Loud-mouthed and using lewd language, I was saddened by the lack of respect-the lack of reverence.

Just earlier that day, we had gone to see the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier-an altogether different experience.  As we approached the Tomb, we were taken by surprise at the small crowd that had gathered, not noticing them because they were all standing so silently.  Everyone knew this was a special place, a sacred place, a place to be reverent.  After all, someone had died that we might be free.

As we stood so quietly there at the Tomb, I almost felt like we were in church, on a communion Sunday, when everyone stands with open hands awaiting a piece of bread and a taste of wine.  Everyone knows it's a special place, a sacred place, a place to be reverent.  After all, someone had died that we might be free.

I'll see you at the "reverent" place this Sunday,

Flint

Prayer for the week:

Lord of all life, open my eyes this week that I might see the sacredness in everything around me.  Help me to stand in awe that I might be more reverent to you.  Amen.

"The Lord's Prayer"

Current Sermon Series

You've prayed it a thousand times.  You can say it without even thinking about it.  It's probably the most widely known and frequently prayed prayer of all time.  Throughout the past two thousand years, it has been spoken in services of worship, in times of personal crisis, and at the graveside of a loved one.

When they asked him, these were the words Jesus taught his disciples to pray.  So, of all the words he could have chosen, why these?  Of all the things to pray for, why these?

During this series of sermons, may the words of the Lord's Prayer draw you closer to your heavenly Father; may they become your daily bread; and may they be a foretaste of the kingdom, and the power, and the glory that lasts forever.

July 25           "Our Father"

August 1        "Thy Kingdom Come"

August 8        "Give Us This Day"

                                       and the Power,

                               and the Glory, Forever"

The weekend of the cross 2010

                            Friendly Circle

Last week Noel sent 23 people to The Weekend of the Cross, a local mission and outreach project that repairs houses in the Shreveport-Bossier area.  Our story is one among 39 other groups who met on Centenary's campus for one cause..."Go and Serve!"  Our group had the opportunity to meet a lady by the name of Kericka. A single mother of three children, Kericka told me that she, at many times, had thought of moving because her windows had been broken out, but instead "refused to let the bad people chase her away."  She also shared with me how one day while watching Extreme Home Makeovers, her children asked her when they would get their turn.  Well, this last weekend they did.  There were no film crews on site, and we were only a work crew of 8 youth and 2 adults, but our impact was anything but small! In fact, sometimes it's the little things that can change someone's life...all we did was replace a few windows, put on a fresh coat of paint, and put up some siding, but hope was restored to her eyes.  She didn't have to tell us...it was evident in her tears of joy.  Next year Kericka's son, DJ, who attends Caddo Middle Magnet, plans to serve at The Weekend of the Cross.  So you may ask, "Is the Body of Christ still making a difference in the world today?"  Yes. I have seen it with MY own eyes.  Thank you Noel Church for helping to make The Weekend of the Cross possible!
