"A Scout Is Brave"
"A Scout is Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean, and Reverent." The Scout Law
brave \'brāv\adj: courageous "I have commanded you to be strong and brave. Don't ever be afraid or discouraged! I am the LORD your God, and I will be there to help you wherever you go." -Joshua 1:9 Joshua was the one who took Moses' place after Moses died. In the beginning of the book of Joshua, God speaks to Joshua, giving him instructions about crossing over the Jordan and entering into the promised land. But there's just one catch: the Canaanites must be defeated. They are still living in the land that God will give to the tribes of Israel. God speaks to Joshua-Proceed to cross the Jordan, you and all the people, into the land that I am giving them...no one will be able to stand against you...only be strong and brave. In the opening chapter of this historic book of the Old Testament the words "be strong and brave" appear four times. The entire story of crossing over the Jordan begins with the word of the Lord to Joshua and the people of Israel-"be strong and brave." Why would they need to hear it four times in 18 short verses? Wouldn't it be enough just to say it once, or at the most twice? What would they be facing that would be so frightening? They had come this far. They had strong warriors. They had had Moses as their leader. Moses! The one who saw God's face and lived! And now they have Joshua. What could they possibly be afraid of that would require them to hear "be strong and brave" four times? The Promised Land. They'd wanted it for a long time. They'd waited for it a long time. They'd prayed for it a long time. And there it was, right in front of them. But they had to cross the river. And crossing the river without a bridge is difficult. And even if they do get across, there are giants on the other side. "Be strong and courageous," they are told. So they cross over. They enter the land. They conquer the enemy. Milk and honey and all that stuff. But how did they do it, without a bridge? What river are you trying to cross? What challenge is before you? What giants are you facing? Whatever it is, may the words of our God strengthen you this day-Be strong and brave. After all, there is a Bridge over the troubled waters. I'll see you at the "home of the brave" this Sunday, Flint |

Junior High Mission Trip
Heifer Project
There is a TV series based on a 24-hour time frame, and they run the entire series based on the events of ONE day! I always wondered how they pulled it off? I mean, how do you get enough material from a 24- hour experience? Well, this last week 8 junior high students, myself, and 3 other LIFE-SAVING adults participated in a 24-hour Global Village Mission Experience at Heifer Ranch in Perryville, AR. I now understand how Hollywood does it! We'll be unpacking this experience for the rest of our lives. It was the longest, but most rewarding 24 hours I've spent in a long time. And where else can you visit Zambia, Asia, Guatemala, Thailand, Appalachia, and the urban slums of India in one day?!? Well, we did-the poorest parts of these places to be exact. It was 98 degrees, we had just enough food to have a meal, but all the villages had to share resources or go hungry. And the best part...you guessed it...the youth had to start their own fire and cook our meal! Sounds like a recipe for disaster, you say? Well, as it turns out we had more than enough food. It's funny how being hungry makes just about anything taste like a gourmet meal, and that night in the village...well...it was! Everyone did a great job. We ALL came back tired and dehydrated, yet grateful for what we have, and much more aware of how many there are in the world who are lacking enough of everything. I know I'll never have a meal or a drink of water in the same way again. Who knows, we may have very well inspired a future missionary or two. If you ever get the chance to visit The Heifer Ranch in Perryville, I highly recommend it! Jonathan Andrews, Youth Director

"The Lord's Prayer"
A New Sermon Series at Noel Church
You've prayed it a thousand times. You can say it without even thinking about it. It's probably the most widely known and frequently prayed prayer of all time. Throughout the past two thousand years, it has been spoken in services of worship, in times of personal crisis, and at the graveside of a loved one.
When they asked him, these were the words Jesus taught his disciples to pray. So, of all the words he could have chosen, why these? Of all the things to pray for, why these?
During this series of sermons, may the words of the Lord's Prayer draw you closer to your heavenly Father; may they become your daily bread; and may they be a foretaste of the kingdom, and the power, and the glory that lasts forever.
July 25 "Our Father"
August 1 "Thy Kingdom Come"
August 8 "Give Us This Day"
August 15 "Forgive Us Our Trespasses"
August 22 "Lead Us Not Into Temptation"
August 29 "The Kingdom,
and the Power,
and the Glory, Forever" |
