"A Scout Is Thrifty"

"A Scout is Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean, and Reverent."
                                                                                         The Scout Law

thrifty: \'thrif-tē\: adj.- practicing good management, especially of money;
not wasteful

I remember going on this one hiking trip when I was a Boy Scout.  We had to pack lightly because the journey would be rather long, and if you were to endure the trek, your backpack needed to be lightweight.  I had initially packed too many things, thinking I would need extra items just in case.  That's the motto of the Boy Scouts -- Be prepared.  But being prepared is one thing.  Being a packrat is another.

The Scoutmaster had us unload our packs and then proceeded to do an inspection.  He made sure we had the essentials, extra socks, rain gear.  Just the necessities.  In my pack, I had a whole box of wooden matches.  "Too many," he said.  "You'll have to take just a few."

"But what if I run out," I asked?  I figured I'd need a bunch of them to get the fire started.

"Well, you'll have to learn to be thrifty.  It's one of the twelve points of the Scout Law.  Learn to build the fire the right way, and it will only take one match.  Plus, it'll do you good to learn how to not waste things that you might need later."

So I re-packed, bringing only the things I (actually he) thought I needed, and we set out on our weekend adventure.

We hiked most of the day, and when we got to the campsite, the first thing he wanted me to do was build a fire.  It was cold out, and we only had a little daylight left.  Everyone collected wood, made three piles - twigs in one, small sticks in another, and bigger sticks in the other - and then he sat us in a circle and we watched as he taught us just the right way to build a fire.  One that would light easily, catch quickly, and burn for a good while.

And he only used one match.  Of the three he let me bring.  My first lesson in being thrifty.

I'll see you at the "thrifty" place this Sunday,

Youth High School Mission Trip
 Appalachia Service Project

Appalachia Service Project is possibly one of the best mission trips a youth could go on.  They learn how to work well as a team, experience new surroundings, and learn a skill they may not learn elsewhere. God is alive in those mountains, ready and willing to show his beauty to the youth and the families they reach out to during the week. The memories and impact of ASP will stick with them for the rest of their lives.

"The Lord's Prayer"

A New Sermon Series at Noel Church

You've prayed it a thousand times.  You can say it without even thinking about it.  It's probably the most widely known and frequently prayed prayer of all time.  Throughout the past two-thousand years, it has been spoken in services of worship, in times of personal crisis, and at the graveside of a loved one.

When they asked him, these were the words Jesus taught his disciples to pray.  So, of all the words he could have chosen, why these?  Of all the things to pray for, why these?

During this series of sermons, may the words of the Lord's Prayer draw you closer to your heavenly Father; may they become your daily bread; and may they be a foretaste of the kingdom, and the power, and the glory that lasts forever.
