"A Scout Is Courteous"

cour-te-ous: \'kər-tē-əsadj: - having or showing good manners  polite

"A Scout is Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean, and Reverent."

                                                                               - The Scout Law

"Always be ready to give a logical defense to anyone who asks you to account for the hope that is in you, but do it courteously and respectfully."
                                                                               - I Peter 3:15, The Amplified Bible

Whatever happened to good manners?  Along with putting your napkin in your lap, sending in an RSVP (on time!), and saying "Yes, ma'am," "Yes, sir," "please," and "thank you," most manners have all but disappeared.  Replaced with "yeah" and "whatever," the practices of politeness have pretty much perished.

But not for everyone.  Just the other day, I received the nicest note from a young lady who had visited Noel for the first time the Sunday before.  She wanted to let me know how much she and her family had enjoyed being in worship and how warmly welcomed they felt.  It was a handwritten note - a rather rare art form these days - on nice stationary, which she had obviously taken time to choose carefully, thoughtfully, lovingly.  The words were gracious, affirming, and filled with gratitude.

I was taken aback by the note.  Not that it wasn't appreciated.  It certainly was.  I guess it just surprised me.  Most of the mail I open, both snail mail and e-mail, is impersonal.  Bills, direct-mail ads, credit card offers, or just plain junk.  So when I opened the nice note, it was such a delight to see actual handwriting, and to read such wonderful words.

The next Sunday, one of our active members came straight up to me after church.  Standing with her was a family whom I had not met.  She said "Flint, I want you to meet our friends.  They came for the first time last Sunday.  And this is their son (so and so)."  Remembering her name, I said, "Ah, yes!  Thanks so much for your nice note."

And then it happened.  This fine young man, who was probably 10 or 11, stuck out his hand and, with a firm handshake, looked me right in the eye and said, "Nice to meet you."

cour-te-ous: \'kər-tē-əsadj: - having or showing good manners; polite

I was taken aback.  But then again, as impressed as I was, I shouldn't have been surprised.  After all, the fruit doesn't fall far from the tree.

I'll see you at the "courteous" place this Sunday,

Animals crackers project

Animal Crackers

Animal Crackers, a family mission project, concluded on May 23 with a party in Fellowship Hall.  Games were played, food was consumed, and money was raised for Heifer Project.  Over a 6-week period, families raised over $340 which will be used to buy several different animals to help families around the world.  Good job!!!

Third Grade Celebration

Noel's third-graders just completed an intensive, but fun, year of Bible study after receiving their Bibles last August.  Parents and clergy were invited to share the day as the class presented a Bible skit, received certificates, and enjoyed refreshments.  Teachers are (l to r) Susie McBride, Audrey Westby, and Martha Holemon.

Blood drive-give the gift of life

The next scheduled Blood Drive is June 20, 2010, in the gym, 8:30 a.m.-noon.  We will provide breakfast for participants.  We have been forced to drop two dates for the Blood Drive this year.  This is due to the lack of blood units received.  Next year we will have two less donation dates.  We will have the rest of this year to grow our numbers, if it does not happen, then we will probably not have a blood drive at Noel.  Contact us if you have any suggestions.  We hope and pray that everyone can adjust their schedule to participate at the June 20, 2010, Blood Drive.  You or your family may be one of the 25% who will need blood in their lifetime.
