"A Scout Is Friendly"

friend-ly \'fren(d)-lē\: adj: favorably disposed; inclined to approve, help, or support

"A Scout is Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind,
Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean, and Reverent."
                                                                                                                               - The Scout Law

Be friendly with everyone. Don't be proud and feel that you are smarter than others.
                                                                                                                                 - Romans 12:16

If you were walking down Sesame Street, Oscar the Grouch would be the last one you would want to run into.  Big Bird, yes.  Or the Cookie Monster, sure.  But not Oscar.  He had a certain garbage-can demeanor about him that was, well, kind of smelly.  During Christmas,  he could be seen hanging out with Archie Bunker, Scrooge, Grumpy, and the Grinch, all waiting together outside the hospital for House to get off work so they could head over to George Costanza's parents' house and moan about their misery.

Passersby would do just that-pass by on the other side, attempting to avoid being swept into the great gravitational pull of their grouchiness.  After all, who wants to hug a porcupine?

But now that I think about it, even Jesus got a little aggravated at times.  Being fully divine and fully human, he surely understood what it meant to get fussy, even angry.  (see John 2:13-16, where Jesus uses a whip or cords, overturns their tables, and clears out the temple.  Whew!  and this is the Prince of Peace!)  And then there was that time when he got so irritated with the disciples for their lack of faith.  But that's the nature of friendship; stay friends with someone for a while and true colors appear, remain real friends with someone long enough and you begin to accept their true colors, and they accept yours, even when those colors clash.  That's what friends do.

...there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother (Proverbs 18:24).

Who among us hasn't found ourselves griping like the garbage-can clan, fussing and fuming, giving Oscar the Grouch a run for his money?  Maybe it's not a bad place to be, though.  In fact, passing by on the other side might just mean missing out on that other guy in the group.  You know the one.  He ate and drank with tax collectors and sinners, a friend of the friendless.

Be friendly with everyone. Don't be proud and feel that you are smarter than others (Romans 12:16).

I'll see you at the "friendly" place this Sunday,

Flint

 UPPER ROOM CLASS RETREAT

Friendly Circle

Members of the Upper Room Sunday School Class, above, had a wonderful weekend retreat at the Wesley Center in Woodworth, Louisiana, on May 28 and 29.  During a nature walk around the lake, some of the members got a picture of the bench the class donated.
