"A Scout Is Loyal" Loy-al adj. faithful to one's oaths, commitments, or obligations or to any person or thing conceived as deserving fidelity, i.e. "a faithful friend." "A Scout is Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean, and Reverent." The Scout Law ---------------------------------------------- In the Old Testament, there is a little book named Ruth. You don't hear it read very much in church, and it doesn't show up in many daily devotional guides. But it is an endearing story of love, loss, and loyalty. Naomi had a husband and two sons, all three of whom died within the first chapter of the book. Her husband in verse three and her two sons in verse five, to be exact. The sons had married though, and their two wives were Orpah (no, not Oprah) and Ruth. After their husbands died, Naomi was alone. "...the woman was left without her two sons or her husband" (Ruth 1:5). She had no husband and no sons left. Only the two daughters-in-law. In those days, as is unfortunately still true for many today, widows were left helpless. With no means to provide for themselves, they were often left cold and hungry. Such was the case with Naomi and her two daughters-in-law. What would they do now? Naomi had heard in the land of Moab, that the Lord was providing food for his people. So she and Orpah and Ruth set out to go back to Judah. I mean, what would you do? Whatever you have to, I suppose. So, they set out. By and by and pretty soon, somewhere along the journey to Judah, Naomi stopped dead in her tracks, looked at Orpah and Ruth, and said, "Go back each of you to your mother's house. May the Lord deal kindly with you, as you have dealt with the dead and with me. The Lord grant that you may find security, each of you in the house of your husband" (1:8-9). And so Orpah went back to her mother's home. But Ruth clung to her mother-in-law. "Go back, like Orpah," pleaded Naomi with Ruth. But Ruth said (and don't miss this, because it's the best part of the story), "Do not press me to leave you or to turn back from following you! Where you go, I will go; where you lodge, I will lodge; your people shall be my people, and your God my God. Where you die, I will die- there will I be buried" (1:16-17). Loy-al, adjective - faithfulness to one's oaths, commitments, or obligations, or to any person or thing conceived as deserving fidelity, i.e. "a faithful friend." Upon joining the church, every member of The United Methodist Church has been asked the question, "Will you be loyal to The United Methodist Church and uphold it with your prayers, your presence, your gifts, your service, and your witness?" The children and youth of the church, including those who are Boy Scouts, learn loyalty by watching the example of adults. Will you be loyal... I'll see you at the "loyalty" place this Sunday,
