                "A Scout Is Trustworthy"

trustworthy  Definition adj. worthy of confidence :  DEPENDABLE

"A Scout is Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous,
Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean, and Reverent."
                                                                              - The Scout Law

"You should also look for able men among all the people, men
who fear God, are trustworthy, and hate dishonest gain;  set
such men over them as officers over thousands, hundreds,
         fifties and tens."
                                                                            - Exodus 18:21

There is an unprecedented level of distrust in our society today.  People don't trust the government.  People don't trust big banks.  People don't trust large corporations.  People don't trust school systems.  People don't trust churches.  People don't trust clergy.  People just don't trust others.  And for good reason.  Just pick up the paper, or turn on the news, or listen in the hallways or around the lunch table.  Everyone has some story they can tell about someone who has broken their trust.

Without trust, relationships get broken, organizations are weakened, institutions are held suspect, and people find themselves separated.

Without trust, all the accomplishments are immaterial, all the education is academic, all the finances are futile.

Without trust, the foundation on which any house is built is shifting, sinking sand.

That's why the first of the twelve points of the Scout Law is TRUSTWORTHY.  All else follows.

So Moses' father-in-law, Jethro, comes to Moses and tells him to look for men who are trustworthy.  Moses does so, and sets such men as officers over the people of Israel.  There were only three requirements of them, that they be God fearing, trustworthy, and honest.

Early on, Boy Scouts learn the importance of being trustworthy.  A good synonym might be "dependable" or "reliable."  And when they grow up, they learn that those who can't be trusted don't go too far in life.  In fact, they learn that being trustworthy matters more than talent, education, or wealth.

During this next week, find someone you know whom you trust.  Tell them how much that means to you.  Thank them for being trustworthy.  And commit yourself to this most important point of the Scout Law, and the Christian faith.  For one day, we will all stand before the throne of God hoping to hear the words, "Well done, good and trustworthy servant; you have been trustworthy in a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master" (Matthew 25:21).

I'll see you at the "trustworthy" place this Sunday,

Hope House 2

Members of UMW Circle #2 spent an afternoon in Noel's Kitchen making 50 sandwiches for Hope House.  These sandwiches along with applesauce, granola bars, and juice were assembled into bags and delivered to Hope House for distribution.

Hope House is a drop-in center for homeless people to take showers, get a snack, do their laundry, and get mail.  Their outreach team, headed by Kristi Bierbaum, takes food, supplies, and medical services to those living on the streets and in homeless encampments.

Noel has committed to making 50 such lunch bags each month for the next year.  If your group would like to sponsor a month, either hands-on or financially, please contact Rachel Scott at 797-8721 or scottrl@bellsouth.net.
