"On My Honor, I Will Do My Best"
Guess what happened 89 years ago. The year was 1921. Woodrow Wilson was the president of the United States. John M. Parker was the governor of Louisiana. John McWilliams Ford was the mayor of Shreveport. W. Winans Drake was the pastor of Noel Church. And L. Beverly Hebert was the first Scoutmaster of Noel Church's Boy Scout Troop 15, the second oldest continuously sponsored Boy Scout troop in Louisiana. For 89 straight years, Noel Church has fostered the growth and development of boys through the principals and ideals of the Boy Scouts of America. 2010 is the 100th Anniversary of The Boy Scouts of America, and Noel Church has had the same Boy Scout troop for almost all of those years. Not too many churches can say that. The ideals of scouting are found in the Scout Law, the Scout Oath, and the Scout Motto. Every Boy Scout learns these values and ideals, not only in principal, but in practice. These are the Twelve Points of the Scout Law: A Scout is Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean, and Reverent. This is the Scout Oath, a promise that each scout makes: On my honor, I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; To help other people at all times; To keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight. And the Scout Motto is "Be Prepared." The boys of Troop 15 began learning these ideals in 1921. And they're still learning them 89 years later. Thanks to all those who, through the years, have actively participated, supported, and prayed for the Boys Scouts of Noel Church's Troop 15. With the blessing of God, and the support of the people of our great congregation, the message of scouting will continue to shape the lives of young people who are learning to say "On my honor, I will do my best . . . ." Will you, as the people of Noel, do your best to help carry on this great tradition? Will you pray for the boys and their leaders? Will you lend your support in whatever way God leads you to do so? And will you join with all Boy Scouts everywhere, committing yourself to live these same ideals and principals? After all, it truly is a noble, commendable, and honorable endeavor. Wouldn't you say? I'll see you at the "honor" place this Sunday, Flint |
