"The Seven Last Words of Christ"

The seven last "words" of Christ are actually seven short phrases that Jesus uttered from the cross.   You'll recall some of the most familiar of those words: "Father forgive them, for they know not what they do," and "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?" Those words have captured the hearts and minds of humans for 2000 years, have been pondered, preached, and performed.  And they have been a source of great grace and guidance throughout the world in every land and in every generation.  The words have also been used extensively in classical, sacred music, notably by composers such as Franz Josef Haydn and Theodore Dubois, and also put to contemporary music by widely acclaimed artists such as Chris Tomlin and Matt Redman.  During Holy Week, we'll gather in the Sanctuary each evening at 6 p.m. for a  series of half-hour worship services between Palm Sunday and Good Friday as we meditate on the Seven Last Words of Christ.

UMW and Jewel House Cooking UP Fun!

Jewel House 1

Noel ladies from UMW Circle #2 and their daughters hosted three young ladies from the Jewel House, a local shelter, for an "evening at home."  The entire group worked together in Noel's kitchen to chop, cook, and set tables.  After dinner, they enjoyed ice cream sundaes and shared favorite scriptures.

Masterworks Psalm Festival

Psalm Festival-Michael MorganOn Sunday afternoon, March 20, it was a cold and snowy first day of Spring when we gathered to celebrate the Psalms as a part of the Noel Masterworks Series.  Our festival leader was Mr. Michael Morgan, a writer, historian, and musician from Atlanta, GA, where he teaches at Columbia Theological Seminary, and serves as organist at Central Presbyterian Church.  The Noel Masterworks Choir presented major works by Hubert Parry, Richard Purvis, and Cesar Franck, and the congregation sang the Psalms as paraphrased by Mr. Morgan and set to familiar hymn tunes.  Mr. E. Ray Peebles of First Methodist in Shreveport was such a delight as the festival organist with his beautiful and creative hymn playing.  Following the program, guests were treated to 38 rare and historic Psalters and Bibles which Mr. Morgan displayed in the Parlor.  Included in the collection were Psalters by John Wesley, Archbishop Parker, Isaac Watts (and signed by him too!), and Lord Fairfax.  Mr. Morgan is pictured here with a first printing of the King James Bible, circa 1611.
