haiti5Health Kits For Haiti

In response to the devastation in Haiti, the congregation of Noel brought items for and prepared approximately 150 Health Kits on Sunday, January 17.  These health kits will be sent to help the people of Haiti through UMCOR (United Methodist Committee of Relief).

During both worship services we also took a special offering for Haiti.  The total offering was $5,200.26.

Thank you for stepping up with your assistance on such short notice.  We will continue to reach out to the people of Haiti as the opportunity arises.
A Prayer for the People of Haiti
by Taylor Burton-Edwards, Director of Worship Resources with the General Board of Discipleship.

The seas roar, the earth shakes,
buildings crumble, roofs topple
and walls turn to dust.

Have mercy on the people of Haiti, O God.

Nations watch, alarms sound,
traffic halts, utilities stop,
and news is hard to verify.

Give us compassion to weep with those who weep, O God.

People die, families mourn,
mountains split,
infrastructure and superstructure alike are gone.

Make us swift to help and persistent to rebuild,
not just things and structures, but lives, O God:

Through Christ, the solid Rock. Amen.

10 Ideas to Help Children Cope With Natural Disasters

While hundreds of thousands of children will be directly affected by the devastation of the earthquake in Haiti, children everywhere will experience distress as they hear of people who have suffered and watch displaced people on TV. Parents and other adults can take steps to help children cope with their fears and live with hope.

Here are 10 suggestions:

1. Allow children to express their concerns through art work and play.
2. Pray with children for those affected by the earthquake.
3. Limit the amount of television coverage of the disaster children watch.
4. Give children something concrete to do, for example let children help purchase and assemble health kits, layette, or flood buckets. See http://new.gbgm-mc.org/umcor/getconnected/supplies for information on how to assemble kits.
5. Develop a family disaster plan for the types of natural disasters that may happen in your area. Role play some possible situations. Knowing that you are prepared will help children cope with fears that they may find themselves separated from family in the event of a disaster.
6. Talk with children about what has happened, helping them to identify their feelings. Ask them what they have heard about the disaster from other children. Sometimes children have heard wildly inaccurate information from their peers that needs to be corrected to alleviate fears that have no basis in reality.
7. Discuss openly with children what your family and church are doing to help those who have been hurt by the disaster.
8. Older children may find it helpful to write about what they are feeling. Suggest keeping a journal on paper or computer.
9. Let children use puppets to express feelings.
10. Do a low-key activity together such as assembling a puzzle, playing a board game, or baking cookies that creates spaces for children to talk. Children often find it easier to talk about important things while their hands are engaged in something else.

Noel's Community Arts Program

Saturday morning on January 16, several volunteers came to the church to unpack and set up the four brand new potters' wheels that arrived.   In addition to teaching basic pottery hand-building, the Noel Community Arts Program will now be offering classes in using the pottery wheels.  Brenda Snider could not wait to try them out and immediately set to work "throwing" a bowl as the volunteers looked on.

In addition to the pottery classes, there will be also be an "Art Exploration" class on Thursday evenings and a "Drawing for Beginners" class on Saturday mornings--no experience required for either of these classes.  While the art classes are geared to teens and adults, there are a variety of music lessons that are appropriate for all ages.  Classes begin soon, so be sure to get your registration forms turned in to the church office right away.  Need-based scholarships are available.

Goodman Plaza Shoppers

Each Friday, a volunteer driver from Noel takes a group of Goodman Plaza residents to the grocery store, waits for them to do their shopping, brings them back to Goodman Plaza, and helps them unload their groceries from the church van.  The Goodman Plaza residents are always so appreciative of this ministry we provide to them.

Our current volunteer drivers are Bob Thomas, Bill Shipp, Clair Bryan, Mike McLallen, and Martha Ann Bigler.  These photos were made of some of the Goodman Plaza residents by Bob Thomas at Christmas.

PantryNoel Neighborhood Ministries' News

Noel's Food Pantry gave groceries last week to Kathy, a cafeteria worker, who was laid off in December.  She expects to be rehired later this month, but said things have been tough recently for her family.

"We really appreciate your being here," Kathy said.  "I don't know what we'd do without you.  It's been over a year since we have needed help with groceries."

We are glad we could be here for you, Kathy.  Thanks to all our wonderful volunteers and contributors who make helping others possible.

Thank you
Thank you to Chris Belk for her many years of service as Noel's Nursery Director.  We wish her the best!
