Benji escaped from a very well fenced back yard on Friday, April 29 in the Montclaire neighborhood off South Blvd/Tyvola. He was last seen on Saturday, April 30 on Seacroft, heading towards Tyvola. He's about 65 lbs, tan/brown shepherd/lab/hound mix. Benji is timid, but may come to you if you are patient & gentle. He is wearing a red collar with white paw prints. | Woof & Hoops Brackets | Thank you to everyone who made our very first Woofs & Hoops Bracket Contest a success! More than 200 Dogtopia clients poured over brackets for entry and in the end, our customer Sean & his pup Laney reigned supreme! Go Charlotte!
In addition to a few (secret) others, Sean shared bits of his pup-influenced winning formula with us:
- 1 and 2 seeds automatically advance in the first rounds
- Dog teams always beat non-dog teams
- Animal teams always beat non-animal teams
- Non-dog animal teams that square off are picked by which one she would chase first
- Non-animal vs non-animal is won by the one that would most scare her

March for Babies

We had such a great time supporting the March of Dimes at the March for Babies on April 30. We exceeded our fundraising goal of $200 thanks to your generous donations! A special thank you to Erin, Tommy, Jackson & Otto Smith, and Ginny & Schultz Welek for joining Penny & Nicole for the 3.5 mile walk. We had a great time and can't wait for next year!

May Treat Recipe

| Fruity Pupcakes
Ingredients
2 bananas
5 strawberries
½ cup apple juice (100%)
1 tsp vanilla
3 cups flour
1 tbsp baking powder
2 egg
2 tbsp honey
Directions - Heat oven to 350 degrees.
- Mash fruit together in bowl.
- Add liquid ingredients, then dry.
- Spoon mixture into cupcake pans (lightly greased or lined with wrappers).
- Bake for 20 minutes.

Celebrating Moms
 This weekend we will celebrate all that our moms do for us. I know I'm eternally grateful for all the love and support my mom Cindy (pictured right with her fur kid Peanut sporting their Dogtopia colors!) has given to me over the years. I love you Mom!
I also want to take this time to recognize all of our doggie moms out there. I know being a mom to my three fur kids can be pretty exhausting at times! Even though they can't tell you with words, we hope you know how much your pups love and appreciate all that you do for them.
As a special thank you for being such a great doggie mom, when you bring your dog for daycare or boarding this Friday, May 6 you'll get a special Mother's Day treat from your dog and all of us at Dogtopia.

We are having such a great time sharing some drinks and fun with you during our First Friday Yappy Hours. This Friday, May 6, we want to have fun, but also help a great cause. Bring a clean, gently used woman's suit or monetary donation to Dress for Success Charlotte for our First Friday Yappy Hour from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m. Dress for Success solves the catch-22 that confronts disadvantaged women trying to enter the workforce: without a job, how can you afford a suit? But without a suit, how can you get a job? Each Dress for Success client receives one suit when she has a job interview and additional apparelup to a week's worth of clothingwhen she becomes employed.
As always we'll have beer, wine and soda for everyone. Your dogs will get to enjoy some off-leash play while parents get a chance to socialize. Please keep in mind that dogs of all sizes will be welcome. We will not be able to have a separate area for large and small dogs. This event is free for everyone, but if you are not a current Dogtopia customer you will be required to sign a waiver certifying that your dog is up to date on vaccinations and in good health.

It's Finally Pet Palooza Time!

For the second year, we'll be running/walking as a Dogtopia team in the 2011 Pet Palooza event. We'd love to have you and your pup join our team! Everyone that joins the team will get a green Dogtopia t-shirt and a bandanna for your dog.
You can either enjoy a leisurely dog walk, or if competition is more your speed, sign up for the Kennelly 5K run. The walker registration fee is $15 and the runner registration fee is $25. Participants will receive an official event T-shirt if they raise/donate $50 or more, inclusive of their registration fees. Prizes will also be awarded to top event fundraisers! After the walk & run you can enjoy a vendor fair, musical entertainment and the much-loved fido fashion show.
Our last training run before the event is Sunday, May 8 at 10 a.m. at Independence Park. We'll be running the actual 5K course, but will also have maps on hand for the one mile walk if you'd like to walk that. If you'd like to join us RSVP with the Charlotte Run With Your Dog Meetup Group.

Does Your Dog Love a Great BBQ?
The month of May kicks off BBQ & picnic season! Family and friends gathering outdoors to enjoy good food and relaxation - of course your four-legged friend wants to join! Through a few steps you can create an enjoyable atmosphere for all BBQ attendees, including your dog. Your dog can take part while also staying happy and healthy: Grill Safety- Keep your dog away from the grill (especially if he/she is excitable) and any items that were used on the grill such as utensils, hot food, aluminum foil, etc. An eager dog can easily burn themselves on these items. Food Safety- Regulating your dog's diet is extremely important. Most human food found at a barbecue is not suitable for them, including:
- Meat with bones can splinter and present a choking hazard
- Foods with sugar are tough on your dog's liver
- Foods with a high salt content, such as chips, can cause bloating
Of course food scraps tend to fall on the ground, and our pup's are great vacuum cleaners, but just make sure they don't over do it or eat something they absolutely shouldn't. Dog's Happiness - Not all of our dogs are social butterflies, so watch their body language and make sure they are comfortable and happy with all of the barbecue guests. If you find them slinking with their head ducked down and tail low, they're telling you they aren't a party animal at that moment. Plan to have a dog-safe room ready in case they need a break from the action. Also, notify human guests that your dog will be around before they come over. They should be comfortable and also aware of any doggy house rules, such as closing doors or gates behind them.

April Dogs of the Week
 Waker for the week of 4/3/11
Waker loves coming to daycare! His favorite thing in the whole world is a good game of chase, especially if it includes keeping the ball away from another dog. Some of his best friends at daycare are Stewey, Khari, Jasper and Josie.
 India for the week of 4/10/11
India is a little firecracker at daycare. She has short little legs but that doesn't stop her from out running most other pups in a good game of chase. If she's not running around, she's under the futon calculating her next move. India likes everyone but her best friends are Juneau, Stewey, Mazzy, and Tallulah. She also likes getting rubs from the playroom attendants and giving kisses. India always energizes the room when she comes to play.
 Zoey for the week of 4/17/11 Zoey is the life of the playroom when she comes to daycare! She doesn't stop playing for a single minute. Zoey is very rarely without a ball or toy in her mouth and loves a great game of fetch. She also enjoys a good wrestling match with Maggie Belle, Yuka and Khari. They're all about the same age and always play really well together. We know we're going to have a great time when Zoey comes to play with us!
 Josie for the week of 4/24/11
Josie is a Xoloitzcuintli (pronounced sho-lo-skwink-le), or Mexican Hairless Dog. The Xoloitzcuintli is the national dog of Mexico! We love her soft skin and playfulness. Miss Josie is very excited to come to daycare each Wednesday. She jumps right into play as soon as she gets in the playroom. She loves playing chase around the playset with Snickers and Maggie Belle. She also enjoys wrestling with Khari, Drake, and Knox. Josie is always happy to spend her days at Dogtopia ®!
