Annual Model Senate Is Hands-On Legislative Learning
| The winners of the 2011 MHS Model senate, l to r: Dan Gilmore, Chris Shields, & Robert Cappeletti |
The Mansfield Model Senate was held April 5th in the Mansfield High School Media Center. Forty five delegates vigorously debated fifteen bills that covered topics such as social host liability law, puppy mill regulation, mandated use of alternative fuels, and genetic engineering.
Model Senate is a unique part of the Mansfield High School Social Studies Curriculum. This program exposes students to the legislative process and provides them with the opportunity to legislate in both school-wide and regional meets. Every junior is responsible for creating, researching, and defending bills. One bill is then chosen by each class to attend the Mansfield Model Senate. The Mansfield Model Senate then chooses 15 delegates to represent Mansfield High School at the Hockomock League Model Senate on April 14-15 at Canton High School. Students will compete against other teams from ten member schools. Model Senate is the only non-athletic competition in the Hockomock League and has met every year since the mid-1960's.

MHS Junior Sings in Massachusetts All-State Festival
Two weekends ago, Johnny Fullerton, '12, had the chance to take part in the Massachusetts All-State Singing Festival at the Seaport Hotel and World Trade Center in Boston. Students from all over the state had the opportunity to audition for the festival and Johnny was picked from hundreds of high school students to participate in the 260-member chorus. For three days he was able to rehearse with world-renowned conductor, Dr. Anton Armstrong, who heads the St. Olaf Choir in Minnesota. According to Johnny, it was a wonderful learning and growing experience, where singers from all over the state could come together and share their love of making music. Johnny felt that he grew immensely as a singer over the festival weekend, learning some new techniques that he brought back with him to our own Mansfield Select Choir. It was a once in a lifetime experience and he can't wait to audition next year! Congratulations!

The Best Things In Life (and NHS) Are Free...

Just as a word of caution... If you or your son/daughter received a letter of invitation from an Honor Society and money is requested, then it is NOT from Mansfield High School! There have been reports of companies (like Who's Who Among American High School Students) sending out letters of invitation with a Mansfield High School return address. Authentic letters requesting application to the MHS chapter of the National Honor Society are signed by Principal Dr. Joseph Maruszczak and NHS co-advisors Anne Carroll and Caroline Cooney. Furthermore, they do not request any funds! | |
