Good morning... Spring has sprung!

First, I have a quick reminder for all of our parents of sophomores.  The annual MCAS testing commences this week with the English language arts test administration on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings.  We have posted the student room assignments for the testing sessions in front of the cafeteria and the guidance office, so be sure your son/daughter knows where he/she is going.

As I am sure you are aware, MCAS is a high-stakes test, and passing it is a requirement for graduation from MHS.  We are very proud of our students' success on this test (91% were proficient or advanced in 2010), and I am very confident that our ELA teachers have done an outstanding job preparing this year's sophomores.  I ask of parents a couple of common-sense requests:  please make sure your son/daughter has gotten a good night's sleep and has eaten a nutritious breakfast.  Those simple steps can often go a long way in improving performance!

Second, I'd like to recognize all of the hard work of the students, staff, and parents that made our annual NESBA Home Show this past weekend such a success!  (More info is below, and for a great video of the percussion ensemble's first place performance, click here.)  Thank you to the Mansfield Band Parents Association for once again working so hard at the event and organizing the day's details.  You guys rock!

Have a great week!

On Saturday March 12th at the Armory in New York City, Mansfield High School WON the boys sprint medley relay of the New Balance Indoor Nationals.  Led by the quick splits of Nick King, Steve Gannon and Griffin Robertson; anchor leg Josh Lampron (pictured above)successfully challenged for the lead with 300 meters to go.  Lampron showed tremendous acceleration out of the final turn for the WIN and a super 1:52.21 800 meter split.  The squad's time of 3:28.99 ranks as a US #1 time for the 2011 season.

The boys returned to the Armory on Sunday where Shayne Collins also earned coveted All-American status by finishing 3rd in the grueling 2 mile race!  Josh Lampron came back to finish 7th overall in the Boys 800 meter run after winning his heat. In the final event of the National Championship Meet, the Mansfield Boys 4 by 400 meter relay team of King, Robertson, Ryan Petrella and Gannon placed an outstanding 8th overall after winning their heat as well. Congratulations to these fine young men on this great achievement!

The MHS Percussion Ensemble and Color Guard had their home competition last Saturday, and with over 45 groups from all over New England in attendance this was an afternoon that did not disappoint. The color guard portion of the day was first up, and the home team had one of their strongest performances of the season capturing a second place finish with a score of 79. The percussion ensemble also did not disappoint with a great performance, taking first place in their division scoring an 89.75. Congratulations to all of the student performers for all of their hard work yesterday and all season long. The percussion ensemble and color guard season comes to a close
locally in the first weekend of April. April 2nd is the New England Percussion Championships at Dartmouth High School and April 3rd is the Color Guard Championships at Reading Memorial High School.
