Mansfield Basketball Rocks the TD Garden

div I south champs!

Last Friday was a monster day for the MHS community as for the second straight year, both the boys' and girls' basketball teams visited Boston's TD Garden to compete for the MIAA Division I South Championship.  Both teams had historical seasons and the girls' and boys' sqauds were ranked as the 2nd and 1st seeds, respectively, in the post-season tournament.

In the first game, the girls' squad lost a hard-fought battle to top seed New Bedford, 47-46.  Seniors Kathyrn Campbell (15 points) and Colleen Copley (pictured below- 13 points, 12 rebounds) led the way for the Hornets.

The boys faced off against #7 seed Newton North in an exciting, neck-in-neck game that wasn't determined until senior Chris Johnson put in a layup off the backboard off a pass from senior Michael Lofton with just 3 seconds left.  With the 48-46 victory, the team now faces St. John's Prep in the Division I State Championship semifinal this Tuesday night at the TD Garden at 7:45 pm.

No School in Mansfield on Saturday, April 2

saturday

The Mansfield Public Schools will not be in session for a half day on Saturday, April 2 as a way to make up the five snow days.  During its meeting of March 8, the Mansfield School Committee reversed its decision to hold Saturday classes after careful reconsideration and the fact that there have been no additional snow days this winter.  Thus, assuming no more snow days, the last day of school will be Tuesday, June 28.  This will be a half day for all students.  Graduation exercises for the Class of 2011 will still be held on Friday, June 10 at 6:00 pm.

Egyptian Scholar Shares Insight With Students
dr hassan and bill hocking
Dr. Hassan and MHS Social Sudies Department Chair Bill Hocking.

On Tuesday, March 8th over 200 students attended a presentation put on by the social studies department featuring Dr. Naglaa Hassan, a professor and Fullbright Scholar from Fayoum University in Egypt.  Dr. Hassan is currently serving as a visiting scholar at Bridgewater State University.   Dr. Hassan gave the audience an overview of what its like to live in Egypt.  She spoke about the education system, food, culture, and problems facing the country, particularly its high rate of poverty. Students were also made aware of the fact that Egypt has been subject to outside rule for a large portion of its history.  The second half of her remarks concerned the current revolution in Egypt which she traced to an earlier revolt in the northern African country of Tunisia.  She told the audience how the Egyptian revolution originated on Facebook and was further enlarged when Internet and phone service was cut off by the government.  Her remarks made students aware of how the new social media may influence future revolutions and movements.  After her remarks Dr. Hassan had about twenty minutes to take questions from the audience.  Through these questions students found out that women and young people played a prominent role in the revolution.  In addition, Dr. Hassan spoke about how people from wide ranges of backgrounds and religions came together in this movement.  When asked about the future of Egypt, Dr. Hassan believed that elections would go through peacefully in the fall and that the new leader would continue to honor Egypt's treaties with other world nations.  On April 7th, Dr. Hassan will be meeting with seventh grade students at Qualters Middle School.

The Mansfield High School Percussion Ensemble and Winter Guard have been rehearsing now for over nine months and in the past few weeks has already begun to shine in local and regional competitions. The winter guard is currently undefeated on the season and recently competed in Winter Guard Internationals New England Regional Competition. The Percussion Ensemble was also extremely successful, beating six other groups from the East Coast. The ensemble is currently ranked first in the country in their division. The group will be traveling to Dayton Ohio in April to compete in the Percussion Ensemble World Championships. Both of these groups work extremely hard and are great at what they do, and you can see the them locally on Saturday, March 19 when Mansfield High School hosts a NESBA competition that will include nearly 50 schools from around New England competing in color guard and indoor percussion. The competition begins that day at 1pm in the MHS Gymnasium.  Come see a thrilling day of artistry and competition!
