Mansfield's South Common became the center of New England's art world two weeks ago as thousands came to appreciate fine art and music at the annual MMAS (Mansfield Music and Arts Society) Southern Mass. Arts Festival.

Under cloudless blue skies and with perfect temperatures, artists displayed their works in media ranging from photography to pottery, from wood to oil, from pastels to copper.  Students from local area schools and senior citizens alike took pride in hanging their works in the open and juried art shows, winning ribbons, cash prizes, and the admiration of all who came to be surrounded by beauty.

MMAS was pleased to announce the winners of the open and juried art shows. The award winners from MHS were:

Martin Reynolds - Third Place, painting
John Davis - First Place, painting (displayed below)
Kristina Ivas - First Place, photography (displayed above)
Jesse Schissler - Second Place, 3-D
Tahreem Karim - Third Place, photography

It is highly recommended that sophomores take it for practice and that all juniors take it as well as it is the qualifying year for the National Merit Scholarship Program. Registration is available in the MHS Guidance Office until October 12. The cost is $28 (checks made out to Mansfield High School). Late registration will be an additional $5. The counselors are available to answer any questions that students or parents may have regarding the test.
The Annual Leaf Raking Project Needs You!!
leaf raking project
Once again the Mansfield High School community will assist the town's elderly thru the annual Leaf Raking Project.  We anticipate helping at least 30 Mansfield households through MHS students conducting fall cleanups. This year's Project will be on Veteran's Day, November 11, starting at 9:30 am. Give something back to your community while spending a nice, brisk November day playing in the leaves with friends!  We also could use adults to help with chaperoning and supervision!

To sign up: Any student may to the main office and put his/her name on the sign-up sheet.  A few guidelines:
  • We would like to have a minimum of 10 people per group at each site
  • If you do not have a full group, just add your name to another group
  • We also would like a team captain from each group!
  • Please sign-up by 10/29/10
  • Permission slips are due by 11/4/10
  • Be sure to bring a rake or leaf blower if you have one... and
    gloves ;-)

A form to volunteer or act as a chaperone/supervisor may be downloaded by clicking here.  For more information, please contact Project Coordinator Donna Harrington at (508) 339-8731 or via email at Donna.Harrington@mansfieldschools.com
