Yesterday was a beautiful day at the Comcast Center as 338 members of the Class of 2010 received their diplomas.  The ceremony featured addresses by Valedictorian Rachel Johnston, Saludatorian Jennifer Giffels, and Senior Class President Kristen Spillane as well as lovely musical selections by the MHS Concert Band, Orchestra, and Concert Choir.  The Sun-Chroncle's account of the ceremony may be read by clicking here.

Congratulations to Mansfield High School's newest alumni!
Mansfield Wildlife Foundation Group Begins at MHS
the coveThe Mansfield Wildlife Foundation is a completely non-profit public awareness group devoted towards raising awareness and contributions for various international wildlife causes. The MWF members are students of Mansfield High School and advised by Mrs. Maggie Gentili. Our group is open to all MHS students and we welcome the support and assistance from the community in helping us peacefully but actively fight for the wildlife concerns we believe in.

MWF is currently devoting our efforts to the dolphins in Taiji, Japan. As documented in the publicly acclaimed and award-winning film, "The Cove", over 23,000 dolphins are brutally speared to death each year off the coast of this Japanese fishing community. The inhumanity, complete with a governmental cover-up that includes the distribution of toxic dolphin meat to school children makes this cause worth fighting for!

The MWF greatly appreciates all support and contributions can be made in various ways.  Our group has organized a Cosi benefit on Tuesday, June 15th.  Dine-in or take-out from 5:30-9:30 on that date and mention the MWF - 10% of your meal will be donated to the OPS (the Oceanic Preservation Society) to help save the dolphins in Taiji.  Also look for our group's donation canisters in various Mansfield businesses to collect funds to help save these beautiful and graceful creatures.

If you want to learn more about this atrocity and how you can help end the dolphin slaughter, come to the high school auditorium Thursday, June 10th at  6 p.m.  We will be hosting a public viewing of the award-winning documentary, "The Cove."  All MHS students, parents, neighbors and friends are welcome to join us.  There will be a bake sale and refreshments served prior to the movie and any donations towards our cause would be greatly appreciated!

Our group meets weekly in room 208 every Tuesday from 2:00-2:30 pm.  All MHS students are welcome to sit in on a meeting to learn what we're all about - - we would love for you to join our efforts!  You can also get updated information about our work and show your support by joining our Facebook group, The MWF - search under Public Groups, School Groups, Community Awareness.  Hope to see you at an event or meeting!
Building Decks, Then Towers, Then....??
intro to engMrs.Elofson's Introduction to Engineering class has been learning about construction technology and how it can be applied to sustainable cities.  In the last couple weeks the class has taken the challenge to design an 8"x 11"x 3" deck limited only to six strips of cardboard, two straws, 12 inches of masking tape and one sheet of copy paper.  To be successful, the decks must hold a live load of two engineering books.  This deck far surpassed the requirements, holding 32 books successfully exhibiting a safety factor of 32.

This week, the class did some further study of compression, tension, torsion and shear forces on structures, this time on 18 inch towers made of paper, paper clips, straws and masking tape.
intro eng
Here, the tower successfully withstands the compressive force of the book.

In the next couple weeks, these students will be applying these concepts and others to design "buildings of the future" that will help solve the problem of urban sprawl.
