MHS Students Making a Difference on the Gulf Coast
gulf coast groupFrom April 15-22, a group of socially aware students spent their spring vacation helping those in need on the Gulf Coast of the southeast.  As many areas are still devastated by 2005's Hurricane Katrina, and FEMA funds have been used largely to improve infrastructure, there is still a great need to help everyday people in the rebuilding process.  To that end, 15 students traveled to Bay St. Louis, Mississippi and spent a packed week performing such chores as cleaning out debris on Main Street in Bay St. Louis, scraping a house, and replanting dune grasses in Biloxi.  The trip by led by MHS science teacher Deborah Fournier and chaperoned by foreign language teachers Leslie Gildersleeve and Elizabeth Olson.

The students (pictured above in New Orleans) who participated on this trip are: Jessica Eason, Stephanie Caljouw. Mariah McGrath, Brittany Phillips, Nick Wilder, Tate Shepard, Brian Franklin, McKayla Jenks, Nicole Porcello, Michelle Greene, Justin Deckert, Kevin Long, Emily Hart, Emalee Mahoney, and Haley Stansberry.

More details about this trip are available on Dr. Maruszczak's blog.

MHS Science Teacher Honored as "Unsung Heroine"
ellie lea
The Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Women has recently announced its 100 Unsung Heroines of 2010.  These women, chosen from hundreds of nominations this year, come from cities and towns across the Commonwealth and each will be recognized for their outstanding contributions to their organizations and communities.  One of the recipients, Mrs. Ellie Lea, is a first-year chemistry teacher at MHS.  Mrs. Lea, the former president of Mansfield Women of Today, is being honored for her outstanding work as founder of Hearts at Play, a 501 3c charitable organization that funds research for families effected by congenital heart defects.  Through her fine efforts, Hearts at Play has raised nearly $70,000, donating $50,000 to Children's Hospital Boston, establishing the Colin Samuel Brown Memorial Fund for pediatric cardiac research.  The organization has also provided Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs) to several local athletic teams as well as medical supplies such as pulse oximeters and AED pads to local elementary schools.

Mrs. Lea will be honored at in a ceremony on Wednesday, May 19, 2010 from 1-4 p.m., in the Great Hall at the State House in Boston.  Congratulations, Ellie!
