dr maruszczakGood morning!

I am sure you have heard or read about the budget crisis that the Mansfield Public School District is presently facing.  At this time the gap in the FY 2011 budget is $1.8 million.  To close this gap the School Committee may be forced to make additional severe cuts in programs and staff.  Such cuts would dramatically affect all MHS students, as there would be profound cuts in our elective offerings as well as in the school's athletic, extracurricular, and co-curricular programs.  Additionally class sizes would increase due to less staff.

The School Committee has made a formal request to the Board of Selectmen for a Proposition 2 1/2 override. While this may generate a great deal of debate, it is extremely important that all community members be informed on the specifics of the school budget. To that end, I would like to invite you to a Community Budget Forum this Wednesday, April 14 at 7:00 pm in the MHS Auditorium. At the forum there will be presentations by the Mansfield School Committee, Board of Selectmen, and Finance Committee. There will also be opportunities for questions and answers.

Detailed information about the FY 2011 school budget may be found by clicking here.

I look forward to seeing you on the 14th.

Cordially,

Dr. Joseph Maruszczak

Mansfield Model Senate Brings Out the Best Bills
MS winners
The Mansfield Model Senate was held March 26th in the Mansfield High School Media Center.  Forty five delegates vigorously debated fourteen bills that covered topics such as healthcare, stem cell research, animal cruelty, police brutality, recycling, and texting while driving.  Model Senate is a unique part of the Mansfield High School Social Studies Curriculum.  This program exposes students to the legislative process and provides them with the opportunity to legislate in both school-wide and regional meets.  Every junior is responsible for creating, researching, and defending bills.  One bill is then chosen by each class to attend the Mansfield Model Senate.    The Mansfield Model Senate then chose 15 delegates to represent Mansfield High School at the Hocomock League Model Senate in April 15-16 at Stoughton High School.  Students will compete against other teams from nine member schools.  Model Senate is the only non-athletic competition in the Hockomock League and has met every year since the mid-1960's.

This year's winners (pictured above) are:

Eric Pederson- proposed a bill to increase stem cell research funding.
John Conway- proposed a bill to create universal healthcare.

The Hockomock Model Senate Delegation 2010 will be: John Conway, Eric Pederson, Jeremy Burke, Nicole Fontes, Elissa Sachs, Domenick Auld, Bobby Brunette, Krista Luchette, Greg Maslin, Katherine Nash, Mike Trowbridge, Amanda Zieselman, Shannon Mowles, and Hannah Melton.
Foreign Language Week at MHS es Muy Caliente!
salsa dancing
The week of April 5-9 brought great weather and a full complement of activities for MHS's celebration of Foreign Language Week.  From Day 1 Hershey's Kisses and "besos" and "baisers" began to appear on teachers' doors with the instructions to "pass it on."   Colorful notices around the school announced the three student contests: a poster contest with the theme of "Peace the World Together with Foreign Languages, an Internet search: "Are You Smarter Than A Language Teacher?" and the first annual salsa and mousse contest.  Thursday after school the contestants and judges gathered to sample the foods, to judge and be judged.  The panel made up of Principal Joseph Maruszczak, Assistant Principal Dave Farinella, faculty members Kevin McGovern and Mary Watkins and students Christine Moyer and Brendan Roche attended to the business of tasting and evaluating with great seriousness.  The winners of the contest Max Kinney (mousse) and Jordan and Taylor Briseno (salsa) each received a $25 gift certificate from Borders.

The closing event Friday morning was a salsa class by Spanish teacher Sergio Morales(pictured above). Close to a hundred students and some faculty members learned the basics and danced to the music of salsa. Muy bien!
The Great Mansfield Cleanup is Saturday, May 1
gac mansfield logo
Each year on the first Saturday of May, students, parents, business owners, and other residents gather to give the town of Mansfield a thorough spring cleaning. Volunteers fan out across town to pick up the trash that litters our roadsides, parks, school grounds, and other public areas. The day concludes with a free lunch at the VIP Tent at the Comcast Center.

During the first Great American Cleanup of Mansfield in May 2008, more than 1,000 volunteers removed nearly five tons of litter and debris from roadsides and parks, including 200 bags of recyclables and more than 100 tires. The 2009 built upon the prior year's success, and this year we hope to accomplish even more. Mansfield's volunteers join millions of others from across the nation in the Great American Cleanup between March 1 and May 31. Keep America Beautiful, the organization that created the Great American Cleanup, expects 3 million volunteers will participate in 30,000 community improvement activities and educational workshops in 17,000 communities nationwide this year. Here's your chance to get involved and take pride in your community. To register or learn more about this great event, visit the Great American Cleanup Mansfield's website
