MHS Senior Project Looking for Parent Volunteers
senior projectThirty students are taking part in the MHS Senior Project Program.  This is the first year that Mansfield High School has offered this type of program to its seniors.  In this program seniors select a project of their choosing and develop that project for the entire school year.  Some seniors this year are involved in creating their own businesses, working in support groups for cancer patients, making MHS a "greener school," and examining railroad safety ...just to name a few of the projects.  The Senior Project challenges students to demonstrate and display their mastery of many skills they acquire during their years in the Mansfield Public Schools.  The program allows students to take control of and have a powerful voice in their own education and development as an individual.  The Project consists of three components; a project/fieldwork, a research paper, and a presentation.  Students have recently finished their research papers and are now preparing for their final presentations.  This is where we need help from the community.  The students will be presenting their projects in May to a panel of teachers and community members.  We are looking for a small group of parents who will volunteer their time to participate in the evaluation of these presentations.  Volunteers would be expected to attend a preliminary meeting on the evening of Tuesday, May 4 and then attend the presentations on the afternoon of Friday, May 14. Any Mansfield parent is eligible as long as you do not have a student in the Senior Project Program.   If you are interested in volunteering please e-mail either Bill Deasy ([email protected]) or Ben Caisse ([email protected]).

Last Friday was an eventful day for Mansfield High School as both the boys' and girls' basketball teams played in the MIAA Division I South final games in the TD Garden in Boston.  In the afternoon tilt, the Lady Hornets beat Durfee 60-50 to hoist the Division I South Championship trophy.  Led by sophomore Michaela Bowes (17 points) and seniors Jess Eason (16 points) and Colleen Hooper (15 points), the deep squad was too overwhelming for the Hilltoppers, who made a run in the 4th quarter but could only come within 3 points.  The Hornets now play Andover, the Division I North champs, for the Eastern MA State Championship on Tuesday night at 7:45 pm at the TD Garden.  Tickets for the game will be on sale at the MHS Office through Tuesday afternoon for $8.00 ($13.00 admission at the door).

In the evening game the boys' team lost to the very talented #1 seed, Madison Park, 72-60.  Led by senior guard Fred Baskin (14 points), the squad hung tough through the first quarter, but were frequently stifled by Madison Park's tough defense as the halftime deficit was 9 points.  Despite the loss, the boys' team enjoyed arguably the best season in the school's history, earning a Hockomock Championship, a 21-win season, a 14-game win streak, and a trip to the sectional finals.

Congratulations to head coaches Mike Redding and Mike Vaughan and these two outstanding teams!
Fan Bus Transportation to the Garden on 3/9
busOnce again, MHS will offer buses for students who cheer on the girls' basketball team for the MIAA Division I Championship game vs. Andover on Tuesday, 3/9 at 7:45 am at TD Garden in Boston.  Buses will leave MHS promptly at 6:00 pm.  Therefore, students should arrive at the school no later than 5:45 pm. The round trip will cost $5.00.  To ride the bus, students must sign up in the MHS office by Tuesday morning.  The chaperoned buses will depart the Garden shortly after the conclusion of the game.

A special thank you to the Paul E. Jodice Memorial Fund, whose generous donation has help to defer the cost of student transportation to the games.  The fund has collected donations from multiple, proud community sources, including Barrows Insurance, some anonymous community members, and members of an adult basketball league affiliated with St. Mary's Church in Mansfield.
French Happenings at MHS
frenchFrench, one of the two official languages at the Olympics games, continues to have an active following at MHS.  This last Friday, March 5, twenty-five students spent a period taking the National French Contest, a nation-wide contest organized by AATF - the American Association of Teachers of French.  Student comments ranged from "not so bad" to "harder than last year's."  Results will be made available in May. Also, that day the Cercle Franais, Mansfield's French Club, accompanied by their advisor Gerard Benoit, took the train to Providence for a total immersion afternoon.  They followed up a visit to Rhode Island School of Design's campus museum with the viewing of a film at the French Film Festival in Providence.

Coming up next week... The Socit Honoraire de Franais, the French National Honor Society, is in the process of raising $1000 to send to Doctors Without Borders to support its work in Haiti.  Even though most of the initial emergency medical needs have been met, the injured population needs follow-up care, especially for those who have lost limbs and will need rehabilitation.  At this point the Society has raised $450.  Look for them at Mansfield's Stop and Shop this coming Saturday and Sunday, March 13 and 14 where they will be canning to meet their goal.  Another fund-raiser planned for this spring will be the sale of summer bulbs and plants.
