This Year's HOBY Youth Leadership Representatives
Each year Mansfield High School has the opportunity to select two members of the sophomore class to represent our school at the Massachusetts Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership Seminar (HOBY). HOBY is a non-profit organization that was founded by actor Hugh O'Brian after spending time with Dr. Albert Schweitzer. Founded in 1958, HOBY's mission is to inspire and develop our global community of youth and volunteers to a life dedicated to leadership, service and innovation. The organization provides leadership education to sophomores across the United States and throughout the world. Students are taught how to think, not what to think through a variety of teaching modes. There is also a community service element to the program where students are encouraged to give back to local communities and understand the importance of civic involvement. Each year over 9,000 students participate worldwide.
There is an extensive application process where the entire student body was invited to complete an application to be considered. A panel of judges blindly reads the applications, and then selects two representatives. The Class of 2012 truly rose to the occasion with over 20 applications, the most we have ever received. This year's representatives from MHS are Brett Fortin and Anne Claire Grammer (pictuerd above). In May they will attend the 3-day Seminar at Bentley University; for more information www.hoby.org or www.mahoby.org .
Congratulations to these fine students! |

January Choir News
Select Choir members have been busy this month preparing for and participating in two local music festivals.
Anne Claire Grammer, Johnny Fullerton, and Lindsey White were invited to take part in the Southeast Music Festival at Oliver Ames High School on January 8th and 9th. Choral conductor Dr. Bagley from the University of Connecticut inspired the vocalists with his passion for singing and knowledge of vocal technique. The students performed "Battle of Jericho," "Awake the Heart," and "Bridge Over Troubled Water" to name a few.
On January 15th and 16th eleven select choir members participated in the Tri-County Festival at East Bridgewater High School. Over 170 students from Bristol, Plymouth, and Middlesex Counties performed in the concert. Students worked with famed conductor Tianxu Zhou from Beijing Conservatory of Music and UMASS Dartmouth. Mr. Zhou taught the students a native Chinese song as well as other pieces including Haydn's "Gloria in Excelsis Deo," "The Quest Unending,"and "Were You There."
Pictured above are members of the Select Choir: Back row (l to r): Lindsey White, Napoleon Soares, Duncan Fuller, Janelle Celestin, Allison Passanisi, and Julia Bogdan, Front row: Anne Claire Grammer, Mikayla Sabatino, Monica Cusack, and Jill Holland.
On February 5th & 6th at 7pm the MHS Concert, Select, and After School Choirs, along with the MHS Dance Team will present the 6th Annual Cabaret Night show. This promises to be an exciting evening of music and dance from Broadway's finest productions. Tickets will be available at the door; $7 for students/senior citizens, $10 for adults, and free for children six years old and younger. Audience members are invited to enjoy a delicious dessert buffet in the cafeteria after the show. |
From the Mansfield High School Food Service
On Tuesday, January 19th the high school food service lost one of its members. Mrs. Debbie McLaughlin suffered a heart attack and passed away that afternoon. The arrangements for her funeral are on Tuesday, January 26th.
In order to allow many of our staff to attend the funeral, we have made some changes to lunch on that day. The menu will be limited to pizza, chicken patty sandwiches, and the deli without the specialty wraps. The snack line will not be open. The teacher's lunch area will not be open. Teachers are asked if they would like something for lunch, to go through the student line.
The cafeteria will be staffed with two members of the high school staff, food service staff from other schools, and several volunteers. This may result in longer lines as they are not as familiar with service here at the high school. You may want to bring your own lunch and snacks on Tuesday the 26th.
We know these temporary changes will cause some inconvenience, but we ask for your patience and understanding during this very difficult time for us.
Thank you, Mansfield High School Food Service
