From the Principal's Desk...
I would like to invite all of you to the debut meeting of the MHS Parent Advisory Council, which will meet on Monday, January 25 at 7:00 pm in the MHS library. This will be the first in a series of monthly meetings of this new advisory council.
I am providing this forum as a vehicle for parents to pitch ideas, and in turn, to solicit feedback from them to improve our school community. When I was looking for parents to serve on the MHS School Council at the start of the school year, the response was outstanding, as more parents wanted to serve than there was openings. Thus, I envision that this new council may serve as another means for parent voice.
One of the first items I would like to tackle is a discussion of of the recent Communities that Care Youth Survey results. It is integral that we all have a handle on what the data is telling us about substance abuse by teens in our community. Only then we may plan some proactive programming so our students get a consistent message about making positive choices.
If you are interesting in attending on 1/25, please e-mail me or call my administrative assistant Cathi Horowitz at (508) 261-7540.
Have a great week!

Mansfield Bank Donates New Scoreboards
MHS' Albertini Gym now has two brand new scoreboards due to a generous donation from the Mansfield Bank. The two, state-of-the-art Daktronics scoreboards were installed last week, replacing the existing ones which were over 15 years old.
Mansfield Bank has also partnered with MHS on two other ventures this year: introducing and instructing a new personal finance module for students in business education classes, and taking on senior interns as part of our Career Pathways program.
The Mansfield Public Schools would like to thank Mansfield Bank for their outstanding support and continued partnership with the schools! Pictured above during a brief ceremony at last Friday night's boys' basketball game are (l to r): Superintendent Brenda Hodges, Mansfield Bank Chief Operating Officer Harold Horvat, School Committee Chair Jean Miller, Principal Joe Maruszczak, Mansfield Bank President John Korona, Athletic Director Joe Russo, and School Committee Member Jim Perry. |

The photographs are currently on display in the MHS lobby during school hours. We hope to put them on display in a public location in Mansfield in the very near future. Pictured above is Tahreem Karim's photograph of an airport terminal passageway. |
MHS Mock Trial Team Back In Action
The Mansfield High School Mock Trial Team, under the direction of coach Claire Ingelfinger, is preparing to build on last year's successful season. Approximately 120 schools statewide participate in this academic tournament sponsored by the Massachusetts Bar Association. Last year Mansfield qualified for the playoffs after going 3-0 in league play. They defeated arch-rival Bishop Feehan in the first round and advanced to the sweet sixteen for the first time in history.
This year's case involves a plaintiff who lost their life savings investing in a hedge fund and is now suing their financial advisor. The 35 members of Mansfield's team are currently researching and preparing arguments for the prosecution and defense with the help of Mansfield attorney Michael Ready. During these competitions students play the roles of attorneys, witnesses, and experts in actual court rooms, with a practicing attorney serving as the judge. The judge scores each team on their knowledge of the case and strength of their legal arguments. Mansfield will be playing the role of the defense in their first competition against Bishop Connolly High School on January 27th at 2:00. In February they will be facing Oliver Ames and Joseph Case High School. This year's regular season matches are being held at Taunton District Court. | |
