MHS Guidance Department News and Notes
guidanceAn emerging trend in college admissions has been the number of seniors choosing to apply early to colleges.  As of 12/11/09, close to 60 % of our seniors will have made applications to colleges and a number of students are already hearing back from those schools. By the time we leave for the winter recess the percentage of seniors who have made an application should be well over 80%. For most seniors and their parents, the next step in the process will be applying for financial aid. Please remember to apply for financial aid by each college's deadline. Financial aid is limited, and if you apply after the deadline, you are less likely to have your financial aid needs met. You may begin filling out the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid, available at www.fafsa.ed.gov ) as of January 1st, 2010. Most colleges would like to see your financial aid forms by the end of January or the beginning of February.

When we return from the winter recess, our attention begins to shift towards the junior class. We will be meeting with the juniors in January to explain the college application process; including identifying potential colleges, standardized testing, and college visits. On February 10th, we will host a College Planning Evening that will focus on the various components of the college admissions process. In March, the Guidance Office will host morning coffee hours for junior parents. At that time parents will have an opportunity to meet their child's guidance counselor in a small group setting to discuss the college application process.
Foreign Language Practicum Takes Off
practicumAfter a trimester of careful tutelage under Jennifer Donahue, MHS Spanish teacher, the first 12 students in the newly created Foreign Language Practicum have begun teaching in 1st, 2nd and 5th grade classes at the Robinson and Jordan Jackson Elementary Schools.

Teaching introductory lessons in Spanish and French (greetings, colors, numbers, etc.), the interns are enthusastically meeting the challenges of introducing a second language to  young people.  They have prepared colorful and creative visuals, and practiced and critiqued their lessons at MHS before crossing the street to the "real" classrooms.  Feedback from the elementary teachers has been overwhelmingly positive, with comments such as, "The class was very involved and receptive to the lesson...lots of smiles!" and " Even though time is at a premium, it was an excellent use our time."
Several Mansfield Students Selected as Boston Globe All-Scholastic Athletes
mcgowanYesterday's Boston Globe featured its annual Fall All-Scholastic section, honoring outstanding student athletes who excelled on the fields, courses, and courts, establishing standards of excellence and dedication.  Many of these students led their respective teams to league and state championships.  Among the Mansfield High School honorees are senior Patrick McGowan (pictured at left), who was named as the Boys' Cross Country Athlete of the Year, his teammates Brendan Boyle and Shayne Collins (All-Scholastics), and MHS Hornet halfback Shawn Doherty.  The MHS Boys' Cross Country team had another terrific year, once again capturing the Hochomock and Division I state championships.  Shawn Doherty had a monster season for the Hornets, rushing for over 1300 yards while scoring 24 touchdowns.
