Construction Students Build Ramp

On Saturday, April 28, 2012,Ramp 2012

construction began on a handicap ramp that was needed for access to the athletic field at Monongahela.  The pathway from GCIT to the athletic field is not easily accessible for wheelchairs, walkers, or any other device.

The request was given to the School of Construction Technology from Athletic Director, Mr. Clarke. Through Mr. Ferrari's design and plans, the students were able to assemble a construction team to build a 35-foot ramp. The ramp consists of two platforms, connected to two inclines, hand rails and a gentle slope.  This project demands attention to detail, material, skill, and a large amount of effort.  The ramp needs to follow specific codes and guidelines for safety.

The Construction Technology department was up to the challenge and the ramp is scheduled to be completed by the end of the school year.

Allied Health News

Cooper Hospital Trauma Center

The Allied Health students participated in the Traumatic Injury Prevention Program (TIPP) offered by the Cooper Hospital Trauma Center on April 17, 2012.  The TIPP program is designed to expose high school students to the consequences of risk-taking behaviors. The program began with scenarios of what would happen when a trauma arrived at the center. A student was used as a model patient while the group was shown the actual equipment used in the resuscitation procedure. From there the students were given a tour of the Trauma Intensive Care Unit to observe the workings of the unit.  The program concluded with a discussion about the outcomes of risk-taking behaviors, including the healing and rehabilitation process, as well as, the potential for death.

Style-A-Thon Raises Over $8,000

Style-A-Thon  Style-A-Thon 2012

On March 24, 2012,

89 cosmetology student volunteers along with 6 GCIT alumni and staff participated in the 6th Annual GCIT Style-A-Thon. The cosmetology students provided facials, haircuts, blow dry styles and manicures. They serviced 220 clients and raised over $8,100 dollars along with awareness for cancer research. All proceeds will go to the City of Hope a Cancer Research Center. Thank you to everyone who helped in making this a successful event.

Love Our Vets 2012

On April 18, 2012 thirty-six students from GCIT took part in the "Love our Vets" campaign by spending the day at the New Jersey Veterans Home in Vineland. It was an opportunity for a younger generation to reach out and thank the Veterans for their service to our country and to learn some interesting history from firsthand accounts.

The Cosmetology students provided hair, nail, and barber services to the residents while the Culinary Arts and Welding students socialized with the Veterans. "One of the clients I received was celebrating her 90th birthday the next day!" said Tabby Kinner, a junior Cosmetology student. "The Veterans trip was a great experience that let me and others be a part of these veterans lives, if only for a day."

The residents were entertained after lunch with a Bingo game while enjoying donuts supplied by the Culinary and Baking students. Winners were able to choose an item from the prize cart, tasty cakes were the big favorite! The Welding students contributed beautiful plant stands to decorate the entrance to the Veterans home. Our Career Center students donated plants to complement the plant stands. Prior to the visit, students had collected donations for the Veterans home which was greatly appreciated by all of the residents.

"We Veterans thank you for your visit here at the NJ Veterans Memorial Home. You were so good to us. You made our day!" said resident Mr. Copland in a thank you note.

Mrs. Arnold, Mrs. Mancini, Ms. Dagrosa, and Mr. Mulvenna stated, "We are very proud of the professional and courteous students representing GCIT."

This year's GCIT participants included senior drama student Alistair Capri and junior drama student Zachary Bates. Students come to KYW Newsradio on six Saturdays to learn news writing, reporting, ethics, and interviewing skills from station managers, editors, reporters, anchors, and guest speakers. Then they research, write and record news stories about their school and community. Their news stories then were aired on KYW 1060.
