Student Highlight - Ryan Quindlen

Ryan Quindlen, senior in the Academy ofRyan Quindlen

Finance and Buisness Management, attended

the Rutger's BizEd Business Leadership Program this past summer.  It was an intense two-week program at the Rutgers School of Business-Camden.  Ryan and eight other area high school students won laptop computers for their accomplishments. 

 

The students graduated from BizEd during a special ceremony at Rutgers on July 22, 2011.  Every student in the program received a certification for his or her participation.

"Out of the Darkness" Suicide Prevention Walk

GCIT, in partnership with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and School Based Youth Services, is sponsoring the third Southern New Jersey Suicide Prevention Walk.

 

Last year's walk had over 600 participants and raised over $19,000 for research and education.

 

"Deadliest Crab Fest" Fundraiser

November 4, 2011, at 6:30pm in the GCIT Cafeteria

Crab Fest LogoGCIT will be hosting "The Deadliest Crab Fest," a dinner featuring Alaskan King Crab from the Bering Sea.  This event is a fundraiser to help support GCIT's career-technical student organizations such as DECA, FCCLA, SkillsUSA, HOSA, and FBLA, as well as School Based Youth Services.  This endeavor will provide student leadership opportunities, counseling services, and recreational activities for our students.
 
The price for the complete sit-down dinner is $40.00. Tickets are on sale now.  They may be purchased by check during the school day from Maureen Hand in the 400-wing nurse's office or Thursday evenings, by check or credit card, from Donna Weber in the 100-wing main office.  If you have any questions, please click here to email Maureen Hand or call 468-1445 x2510.

Parent/Student Information Sessions
The Admissions Department will hold three Parent/Student Information Sessions. We will open our doors for you to learn about our programs, meet our staff, and explore our state-of-the-art facilities.

Sessions begin at 6:00pm on week nights

Youth One Stop GED Program

The Youth One Stop GED Program provides free GED test preparation services to out-of-school Gloucester County individuals ages 16-21.

The program has a new location: 

College Services Building
6 Barnsboro - Blackwood Road
Sewell, NJ 08080

In addition to academic services, the program also offers the following: 

  • Employability skills training
  • Vocational training
  • Job search assistance
  • Transition assistance to post secondary education options
  • Opportunities for trips, service learning, and career exploration
  • Weekly rewards and other incentives
  • Counseling services
  • Access to the Fitness Center four days a week
  • Transportation assistance

The Youth One Stop GED Program is operated by the Gloucester County Institute of Technology through funding from the Gloucester County Workforce Investment Board and the NJ Department of Labor and Workforce Development. It operates year round and is open from 8:00am to 3:00pm.

School Based Youth Services

SBYS is a counseling agency set up in GCIT. Counselors are on staff to assist with any issue that someone might want to explore in the confidence of a trained professional.


Services are open to Gloucester County high school students.

The Branch
The Branch is a teen drop-in group held every Thursday at GCIT when school is in session. It is open to all Gloucester County high school teenagers. The group is for teens, facilitated by trained teen leaders with adult staff present.


Topics of discussion include communication skills, enhancing self-esteem, drug and alcohol education, stress reduction, and more. The group meets in the Media Center, 2nd floor, 200 wing. Sessions will begin promptly at 3:30pm and end at 5:00pm. For more information, please contact a SBYS counselor.

 

Red Ribbon Week

The week of October 24, 2011, SBYS will sponsor a "Tree of Hope."  During lunch, students may obtain a red ribbon and tie it around a tree. The tree filled with red ribbons will symbolize the plight of those affected by substance abuse, and the hope that they will find their way toward a healthier lifestyle.

 

School Violence Awareness Week

School Violence Awareness is recognized during the third week of October.  SBYS will be hosting a Cyberbullying and Internet Safety Program. Please see the information below.

Allied Health & Medical Science News 

The Academy of Allied Health and Medical Science would like to welcome back our academy upper classmen and take this time to extend a warm welcome to our incoming freshmen. We wish them the best in all endeavors during their journey at GCIT.

 

We would also like to welcome our new academy faculty member, Ms. Carol Diemer, BSN, MHA.

 

Several AHMS students will be attending the American Red Cross 14th Annual All High School Conference, Thursday, October 13, 2011, to be held at the American Red Cross in Philadelphia. This conference is a way for the Red Cross to say thank you to our students who help to facilitate the blood drives by volunteering their time. Students will have the opportunity to go behind the scenes to explore how blood donations are processed. They will also have the opportunity to visit the organ donation lab.

Ryan Kowalski - Class of 2011Ryan Kowalski

Transportation Technology
 

Ryan Kowalski earned a gold medal at the National SkillsUSA Leadership Conference in June.  Ryan is a 2011 graduate of Gloucester County Institute of Technology's School of Transportation.  He began competing in SkillsUSA during his sophomore year.  This year, Ryan not only brought pride to the GCIT community he earned a Harley Davidson motorcycle for GCIT to use for training.  He won over $60,000 in educational scholarships and prizes.

 

Ryan is currently attending Power Sport Institute at Ohio Technical College, V-Twin program.  After completing the program, he will then go to Motorcycle Mechanics Institute (MMI) for two years.  All of Ryan's education and training will be tuition-free because of the scholarships he earned at SkillsUSA.

Louis (Steven) Kelly - Class of 2011

Louis (Steven) Kelly was named Athlete of the Week at Adelphi University for the week of 10/5/11.  Click here to read more.

 

Kelly also opened the 2011 edition of the Northeast-10 Championship with a two under round of 70 and never looked back, cruising to a five stroke victory at the Cyprian Keyes Golf Club in Boylston, Massachusetts on Monday, October 3. Kelly's performance helped the Panthers to a third place finish, snapping Adelphi's NE-10 Championship win streak at two.

 

Louis Kelly, in his collegiate Northeast-10 Conference Championship, won the overall individual title while helping the Adelphi Panthers to a third place finish. For his efforts in the tournament, Kelly was named an All- Northeast-10 First-Team selection and was honored as the Northeast-10 Golfer and Rookie of the Year, the first Panther to earn either distinction. Additionally, he was named the NE-10 Player and Rookie of the Week.
