Team GCIT Walked and Worked for Hope | On September 12, 2010, staff and Cosmetology students worked, and participated in, the "Walk-4-Hope" event. Team GCIT raised $359 for the cause, as well as donated their time and talent to the walk. The students performed manicures and added pink hair extensions to the walkers at Campbell's Field, Camden before they walked over the Benjamin Franklin Bridge to Headhouse Square, PA.
Team GCIT is part of a Learn and Serve project to benefit the City of Hope, a cancer research center. By donating to the cause, it allows scientist and physicians to search for a cure.
The Cosmetology students who were involved included the following: Jessica Barr, Heather Cooper, Alyssa Ducey, Ashley Fischer, Taylor Heaney, Nicole Ireland, Bianca Pagano, and Arian Wilson. The staff who helped were James Angarola, Katie Arnold, Rita Hale, Theresa Kerney, and Doreen Mancini.

Carter Ford picked to be in PBS Special |
Congratulations to Carter Ford, a sophomore in the School of Performing Arts - Drama program. He was one of four students chosen, out of over 200 from across the tri-state area, to be featured in a PBS special called "Do The Math." This show has the same producers and writers of "Cyberchase."
At the end of last school year, Carter went up to New York City to audition for the PBS special. The audition did not follow the normal process. It included group work and rigorous math equations. His math experience and interpersonal skills got him the job and he was the youngest member chosen for the project.
Over the summer, Carter filmed three episodes in New York. Topics of the special ranged from measuring clothing, calculating the beats in rap songs, and creating a video game. While filming for the PBS special, Carter also participated in a production of GCIT alumnus Josh Kurtz's original play True Villian's.
It was a busy and fun-filled summer for Carter and we wish him the best of luck. The show will air in October on PBS. Please check their website for more details. |

Transportation Technology News |
9th Grade Transportation Technology
Students have been learning about shop safety since the beginning of school. The students will start learning about hand tools and fasteners. Students will begin working on their aluminum plate projects. The plate project helps to reinforce student learning by having them complete designated tasks. By the time the projects are finished, the students should have learned basic hands-on working skills and knowledge of fastener identification and proper usage.
12th Grade Auto Restoration
Students have been learning about the basics of finding and purchasing a vehicle for restoration. The class learned about using a vehicle price guide to find a car's approximate value and how to evaluate a car's condition using a multi-point checklist. The whole class was surprised to see how much is really involved in the process, other than simply writing a check. |

100% Pass Rate for 2009-2010 AHMS Seniors NCHSE test
The National Healthcare Foundation Skills Assessment is a certificate program offered by the National Consortium for Health Science Education (NCHSE). This test measures student mastery of basic skills and knowledge that workers in all aspects of the health industry need to know. The assessment satisfies the technical skills assessment requirement in state and federal legislation. Overall, only 58% of students nationwide taking the NCHSTE exam passed and received national health care certification.
All 21 of GCIT's senior AHMS students (100%) achieved national certification. The national percentage for certification was 58% and our pass rate was 100%. The AHMS curriculum and implementation process has prepared our students for a strong entry into various health fields. These statistics help to verify that we are on the right track and are providing a rigorous and relevant health care curriculum.
