Cyberstorm Brings Home 2010 Rookie Inspiration Award |
2010 Robotics Team |
Cyberstorm, GCIT's first Robotics Team, were the recipients of the 2010 Rookie Inspiration Award at the 'FIRST Philadelphia Regional Robotics Competition' which was held on March 25, 26, and 27, 2010.
FIRST, For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology, is an international competition geared at teaching young people how to work with each other and with adult mentors in the spirit of "gracious professionalism" by designing and building a robot to compete in that year's game. This year's season started out when the team received their kit which included the announcement of the game and the arrival of the parts (electronic control system, motors, wheels, etc.) that the team used to design and build the robot. The game had similarities to soccer where the robots would kick a soccer ball into a goal. The playing field was divided into three sections by 15" bumps that the robots could climb over or move between via a tunnel.
The team was mentored by members of Rowan's Mechanical Engineering Department, which included Dr. Eric Constans, a professor, and Mr. Kyle Fitzpatrick, a technician. Mr. Clif Smaley, an engineer, also volunteered his time to mentor the team. The team met at the Rowan shop at night and on weekends. Team members were involved in computer assisted designing using SolidWork, building and welding the frame, machining and constructing parts, programming and electronics, and in record-keeping and team paperwork. Team parents graciously donated time, skills, and food to keep the team on schedule as they worked to finish the robot by the deadline.
The robotics team is funded by grants from NASA and the JC Penney After School Program. They look forward to competing in more competitions and are looking forward to demonstrating their robot at JC Penney in the Deptford Mall.
Any student interested in joining the team should see Mrs. Belding, Team Coach, in room 250. |

Hawk Mountain Hiking Trip
By Blaise Colamarino, Culinary Arts student
On Saturday, May 15, 2010, SBYS took 19 students to Hawk Mountain. It was two hours of anxious waiting to get to the mountain. This trip was a lot of fun. We had to climb large rocks and walk on difficult terrain. We had to hike four miles before we could start heading up the steep hill. When we got to the top, it felt like such an accomplishment. Next, we had to hike over big rocks and then we stopped to eat lunch where there was a spectacular view of the valley. After lunch, we traveled to the North Lookout of the mountain and we had to scale big mounds of rocks, but it was well worth it to see the view. It was amazing! Lastly, we headed down the hill and went home. This was not only an active and fun experience, but it was social and one that I will always remember. I got to meet new people and made new friends. I can't wait to do it again next year. |

Summer Reading
In an effort to encourage all our students to become lifelong readers, the books on this year's list vary in subject matter and level of difficulty. This variety offers students and their parents a wide range of authors and styles of writing in both fiction and non-fiction. Students are encouraged to discuss their selections with their parents and/or guardians prior to beginning the summer reading project.
The complete summer reading list will be posted to the GCIT website at the end of June. |

Academy of Allied Health & Medical Science |
NHFSA certification
The AAHMS students took the National Healthcare Foundation Skills Assessment certificate exam provided by the National Consortium for Health Science Education (NCHSE). All students passed the examination and received a certificate documenting student mastery of the basic knowledge and skills needed by all healthcare workers, regardless of the pathway or occupation they select.
The National Healthcare Foundation Skills Assessment certificate program provides a way to identify, demonstrate, measure, and ultimately recognize student achievement in health science education programs. It consists of 100 multiple-choice questions that align directly to the National Health Foundation Skills and Accountability criteria, and it satisfies the technical skills assessment requirement in state and federal legislation.
AHMS Students Visit Rothman Animal Hospital
Students, with an interest in the field of Veterinary Science, visited Rothman Animal Hospital in Collingswood, NJ. They spent a full day exploring the clinic and observing various surgical procedures performed on domestic and feral animals. They watched the staff care for sick animals and animals recovering from surgery.
Allied Health Students Pass Computer Certification
Sophomore Allied Health students, in their Integrated Technology class, took their first IC3 certification test in May. The curriculum provides students with the foundation of knowledge they need to succeed in environments that require the use of computers and the Internet. The first test, Computing Fundamentals, covers a foundational understanding of computer hardware, software, operating systems, peripherals, and troubleshooting to help you get the most value and impact from computer technology. Congratulations to those students who passed the test!

'Love Our Vets' |

On April 14, 2010, thirty-nine students took part in the 'Love Our Vets' campaign by spending the day at the New Jersey Veterans Home in Vineland, New Jersey.
Students provided hair and nail services to the residents, socialized, and listened to fascinating stories about past generations. The residents were entertained during lunch with music and song. Prior to the visit, students collected donations for the veterans which were greatly appreciated.
'Love Our Vets' is one of the many community service projects that students use to give back to their communities. |
STEP Students Step Up | The students of the School of Construction Technology's STEP program stepped up to help out the school maintenance department. Their task was to design, build, and install storage shelving. They started with the basic design and then the work began. Shelf frames were constructed and sheathed using traditional framing skills. Supporting members were constructed using skills similar to post and beam construction. A noteworthy fact, is that the project was constructed, with great energy and effort from hand tools and with very little assistance from power tools.
STEP students are happy to leave behind a display of the skills they acquired from GCIT.
The maintenance department staff were thankful and impressed by the level of skill that was used to construct the shelving and were thankful to the students for their help.

Sesame Place Cake Competition |
Mariah Worrell, senior Culinary Arts student, competed in an Extravagant Cake Display competition on May 1, 2010, at Sesame Place in Langhorne, PA. Mariah was part of the opening day activities along with two other high schools from Pennsylvania. Each school decorated a cake to celebrate Sesame Place's 30th birthday.
Mariah's cake was a 5-foot by 3-foot cake with a variety of Sesame Street characters and attractions. For her effort and incredible cake design, she was given twenty-five day passes to the park. The cake was a wonderful display of Mariah's talent and skill. |

The students who went on the trip spent the afternoon preparing meals for the residents, and the students that could not attend, donated the food for the event. NHS and NTHS members also spent some time with the residents to keep them company. The trip was rewarding for the students and the families that they supported that day. |
