Greetings!
It's been a very busy year for NCWU between hosting a historic Women's Advocacy Day and embarking on some new coalition efforts that you'll read more about here!
We're gearing up for an exciting 2012 as we join forces with partners from around the state to get women to the polls in this important election year! 2012 will also feature our signature program, the Women's Agenda Assemblies, next fall and our Legislative Report Card in the spring.
In the meantime we're looking forward to one of the most inspiring nights of the year for NC Women United. The presentation of the Anne Mackie Award will take place December 13 at our annual holiday party. Please read on for more details. We hope to see you very soon!

2011 Anne Mackie Award Nominations Due November 18
Save the Date! Award Presentation will be held December 13
| 2010 winner, Nancy Shoemaker, with the award's namesake, Anne Mackie. |
Each year NC Women United presents our Anne Mackie Award to recognize an individual's lifetime contribution to advocacy on behalf of women.
Once again the Anne Mackie Award Committee is delighted to request your assistance in highlighting one woman's contributions and long-term commitment to our common goals.
Please review the award criteria and application carefully and submit your nomination to mackieaward@ncwu.org by Friday, November 18 at 5:00 p.m.
The annual NC Women United Anne Mackie Award was established in 2008 to publicly recognize the long-term commitment and work of Anne Mackie. Anne Mackie founded the North Carolina Women's Legislative Agenda, the precursor of NC Women United, and was instrumental in the creation and development of its signature project, the Women's Agenda Assemblies. NC Women United was pleased to be able to present the inaugural award to Anne Mackie in recognition of her years of service.
The 2011 award recipient will be honored at the NC Women United holiday party, which will take place on Tuesday, December 13 from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at the Busy Bee in downtown Raleigh. Please make plans to join us at this fantastic networking event as we gather in solidarity to recognize challenges this year brought while also cherishing our successes, strategizing future victories, and celebrating the contributions of the 2011 award winner!

NCWU Attends Governor's Conference for Women
 | Mary Peterson and Becky Mock in front of HERVotes display with pledges from around the state.. | NC Women United participated in the North Carolina Governor's Conference for Women held on November 2 in Charlotte.
NCWU sponsored a booth at the conference where, in addition to our organizational information, we also promoted the recently organized HERVotes Campaign. Many national organizations of our state members have already signed on to partner with HERVotes which aims to educate and engage women to use their voices and their votes to protect women's health and economic rights. Over 200 women pledged to vote in Election 2012 at the NCWU booth and the conference served as a great introduction for a diverse group of women across the state to learn about NCWU! New 14 Carolina reported on the event and featured NC Women United's booth and some of our volunteers in their coverage. You can also see photos of the day including some great shots of our booth and our HERVotes voter pledge sign here. Many thanks to all those who helped make this event a big success! NCWU Co-Hosts Screening of Miss Representation in Durham
NC Women United is proud to co-sponsor a film screening of Miss Representation on November 29 in Durham.
This powerful new documentary explores how the media's misrepresentation of women has led to the underrepresentation of women in positions of power and influence. The film challenges the media's limited and often disparaging portrayals of women and girls, which make it difficult for women to achieve leadership positions and for the average woman to feel powerful herself.
We are delighted to partner with several of our member organizations including Ipas, Planned Parenthood, NARAL Pro-choice NC, and many other community allies to bring this important film to the Triangle.
The Miss Representation screening will be held on Tuesday, November 29 at Motorco in Durham. The event is free and open to the public. Doors open at 6:00pm and film will begin at 7:00pm. Check out the Facebook event and help us spread the word! |
