June Kimmel honored by NCWU Anne Mackie Award presented on Dec. 8
NC Women United presented its 2009 Anne Mackie Award to June M. Kimmel
of Davidson. The Award recognizes a lifetime contribution to advocacy
on behalf of women. All who attended the event in Raleigh were in agreement that the award
and June were a perfect match.
We were also pleased that the award's
namesake, Anne Mackie, could join us, and the picture above shows Anne and June.
As part of the award, a donation was made in June's name to the Center for Community Transitions
in Charlotte, a program for people finishing their criminal sentences
and being repatriated to their "home" community - though that may have
very little in the way of support for them.
More about June and the award.

First Member Showcase
Learn more about our member organizations
Mark your calendar now to attend a new NCWU networking event: Several of our "membership" organizations will have tables and do brief presentations to explain their member benefits and public policy priorities. We're planning to advertise this widely, and hope many join us to learn more about how to get connected to the "feminist movement in North Carolina." President Alison Kiser will represent NCWU and explain how new people can get involved in our Women's Agenda Assemblies and other projects. All member organizations are encouraged to attend to exchange information with this group of organizations that represents thousands of women across North Carolina. We hope this is the first of a series of networking events that will allow us all to learn more about each others strengths and priorities so that we can all get more from our coalition. Watch the NCWU web site, www.ncwu.org, for more details. Registration information should be posted by early February.

Teens Speaking
Out or Jvenes
Hablando, is a collaborative program sponsored by Ipas and El Pueblo, Inc.,
which began during the summer of 2009, featuring ten sessions focused on
sexuality and reproductive health and rights. At these sessions, teens
experience a safe place for youth to learn, debunk myths, and thoroughly discuss
these topics. Participating youth are sharing what they learn with others by actively participating in community events
and attending both in-state and out-of state conferences.
Currently, Ipas and El
Pueblo, Inc. are recruiting bilingual teens in the Triangle area to participate
in our second training series slated for Summer 2010. We also are planning the
first statewide Youth Reproductive Health/Rights/Justice Conference that will
take place during Fall 2010. For more information please contact Gina Uresti,
Program Coordinator, at gina@elpueblo.org.
