The 4 Principles of ImprovEdge Outside Work
This month we are featuring guest blogger and ImprovEdge facilitator, Artie Isaac. Artie reflects on the use of the ImprovEdge priniciples outside the work environment. Read on, you will enjoy this new perspective! |
| From Artie |
A trusted, long-time workmate once said to me, "This isn't just work, it's life." She's right. We aren't working to live or living to work. We are living at work. So what? So, then, just a couple months later, I met Karen Hough and she said, "Life is improv." She's right, too. We wake up in the morning envisioning a plan for the day. But by 10 a.m., that plan is revised. New challenges cross your desk. Or maybe the plan is changed before you even leave home in the morning. (Like when the dog throws up.) Here's a test to prove that Work = Life = Improv. Ask yourself. Do the four fundamental principles of ImprovEdge work in real life, beyond the office? Why, Yes! They do! With parent, roommate, lover, child, or neighbor...
- Yes! Space - listening with "yes" in mind works wonders for relationships at home.
- Building Blocks - building on anyone's ideas moves everyone forward, better, faster.
- Team Equity - involving everyone's strengths is good for one and all!
- Oops to Eureka! - misheard words can be a source of creative exploration. (When I was little, I thought my stockbroker father sold socks.)
So let's all play the home version of ImprovEdge. What works with workmates works with other humans, too.
A teacher of creativity at The Ohio State University and co-founder of SpeakerSite.com, Artie Isaac trains and facilitates teams and individuals for greater creativity and engagement. Details are at ArtieIsaac.com.
