Don't forget that we love your questions! ANY dental question! Remember that we want you to enjoy life with a happy healthy smile!

This month's newsletter is based on your questions! Dry Mouth --- more common than you may realize!
Is your mouth dry?
Do you notice it is difficult to swallow?
If you have experienced this symptom, often you may be dealing with a condition called dry mouth. The medical term for dry mouth is xerostomia.

This condition can be harmful to your oral health. Saliva keeps our mouth moist and allows us to soften and digest our food and also neutralize acids that fuel the bacteria that can cause tooth decay.

Without adequate moisture in your mouth you may experience cracked lips, bad breath, burning sensation of the tongue or increased mouth infections like thrush.

Since there are several causes of dry mouth, it is important to be aware of what could be causing your dry mouth condition so that you are prepared to treat it properly and effectively.

Xerostomia...
Is it being caused by your medications?
Are you taking a prescription medication to treat anxiety, depression, epilepsy, or high blood pressure? How about the over the counter medication for your allergies-- like antihistamines' and decongestants.

How's Your Health?
Do you have an autoimmune condition?
Perhaps a condition such as: Sjogren's Syndrome, HIV/AIDS, Alzheimer's, Rheumatoid Arthritis or Diabetes?

Radiation to the head and neck for cancer treatment can damage salivary glands and chemotherapy treatment can reduce the amount of saliva that is produced

Tips
Make Life with Dry Mouth Better
  • Drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration
  • Suck on sugar-free candy or chew sugar-free gum
  • Brush your teeth using a fluoride toothpaste and follow with a fluoride rinse
  • Use an artificial saliva substitute
  • Use a mouth rinse, toothpaste or other products designed to alleviate dry mouth
  • Visit your dentist regularly
  • Ask us how we can help you be more comfortable with dry mouth
