At our July board meeting, held at the restored auditorium on The University of Arizona--College of Medicine Phoenix campus, we heard from Dr. J. Lyle Bootman, Dean of the College of Pharmacy, University of Arizona, and MaryAnn Guerra, CEO and Chairman of BioAccel, who spoke exclusively to PCA members on the initiative that is focused on changing the value and quality of the healthcare industry. Through the Healthcare Transformation Institute, Dr. Bootman and Ms. Guerra are pioneering efforts to not only change healthcare delivery, but also education and technology. Video clips of their presentations are available on the PCA blogsite here.

*An effective dose is the smallest amount of substance required to produce a measurable effect on a living organism. We hope our small sample leaves you craving more information about health and bioscience in Greater Downtown Phoenix. Look for another dose soon!

Good News for Downtown Development--RFP for Biomedical Research and Lab Posted by City of Phoenix
ASU Nursing asthmaThe cranes may all be down (for now!) but that doesn't mean that all downtown development has ended.

The City of Phoenix is seeking proposals for the private development and financing of a biomedical research and lab facility on city-owned property at the Phoenix Biomedical Campus (7th Street and Van Buren area). Review and download the RFP at the city's website here.

This would fill another empty lot in the core of downtown, provide new construction and medical-related jobs, and improve healthcare for all Arizonans. Proposals are due September 3, 2010.

AZBio also has this posted on their Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/AZBio.
ASU and Phoenix College Partner for Healthcare Education
ASU nursing med lab womanA unique partnership between the Arizona State University College of Nursing & Health Innovation and Phoenix College has made earning a bachelor's degree easier and more affordable.

Students can now complete a bachelor's degree in the Medical Laboratory Science program earning 90 college credits from Phoenix College and 30 through ASU. Except for nine upper-division general education credits, which can be completed online, the 30 ASU credits will be taught at Phoenix College and affiliated clinical sites throughout the Phoenix area. This collaborative transfer program serves the need for trained healthcare professionals. Back to School Focus: Bioscience High School in Downtown Phoenix

bioscience high schoolAs school begins again and students--from elementary school at the University Public School to high school at the Bioscience High School to university level at ASU, UofA, and the community colleges--are seen on downtown Phoenix streets, we can be proud of the progress that has been made over the past five years. Students in this year's senior class of 2011 at Bioscience High School represent tomorrow's leaders in science and technology.

TGen's New Link to ASU Supercomputer Is Nation's Fastest
asu hpc supercomputer chipA new light-speed computer connection using a military-tested network provides the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) with the nation's fastest supercomputer link among life-science facilities. This enhanced capability moves data up to 100 times faster between TGen and Saguaro 2, Arizona State University's supercomputer, accelerating TGen's molecular research into diseases such as Alzheimer's, diabetes, and many types of cancer.

The transfer and processing of data sets containing trillions of bits of DNA information that once took more than a week will now be done in just a few hours. To make this possible, Cox Business Arizona has installed a 10-gigabit LightWave fiber-optic connection between TGen in downtown Phoenix and the Saguaro 2 supercomputer, 10 miles away at Arizona State University's main campus in Tempe. UofA College of Medicine
For many years, medical students and resident physicians educated at The University of Arizona College of Medicine have trained at Phoenix Children's Hospital. Under a pact approved by the Arizona Board of Regents, the hospital and the medical school's Phoenix branch will now launch a far more robust collaboration.

Under the affiliation agreement, which the Phoenix Children's board authorized, the College of Medicine-Phoenix will make Phoenix Children's its principle pediatric affiliate, while Phoenix Children's will make the medical school its principle academic affiliate.

Video: BioAccel--Helping to Commercialize Biotechnology
Earlier this summer, BioAccel CEO and Chairman of the Board Mary Ann Guerra and Ron King, President and Chief Scientific Officer, spoke on Arizona 8 KAET's Horizon about the work that BioAccel is doing with companies like Kemeta, which is developing a breath analysis device to measure fat burning capacity. BioAccel is helping them find funding to develop bioscience-related products.

Community Walk: Arizona BioMap
The Arizona BioMap is a statewide effort aligned with Arizona's Bioscience Roadmap and displays Arizona bioscience firms, research institutes, educational institutions, hospitals, and more.

Zooming into Greater Downtown Phoenix will give you an indication of all the biorelated companies and organizations in the central city and shows the outline of the Discovery Triangle and the light rail corridor.
