SFAz Leaders Strive to Preserve, Advance State's Research-Driven Economy

In 2006, Arizona's three CEO groups pledged to help the state Legislature create Science Foundation Arizona in what would be an unprecedented, $300 million public-private partnership. Since then, SFAz has become a high-impact element in both the state's bioscience research landscape and Arizona's economic future. But now, with SFAz facing major funding cuts, its leaders are working to defend hard-won gains.

Cystic Fibrosis Awards TGen President Dr. Jeffrey Trent "Breath of Life"

Dr. Jeffrey Trent  Dr. Jeffrey Trent, President and Research Director of TGen, was recognized as
  the 2009 distinguished honoree for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation at their Second
  annual Breath of Life Gala. The Breath of Life Award honors those in the local
  community who have made outstanding contributions to fighting and finding a cure
  for cystic fibrosis. Watch a short video (4:27 min) that provides a glimpse into why

Phoenix Biomedical Campus Expansion Plans

Expansion plans for the Phoenix Biomedical Campus have been released and would add three new projects to this growing downtown Phoenix bioscience zone, according to the Arizona Daily Star.

UA Cancer Center  The Arizona Cancer Center plans to develop a full-service outpatient cancer
  treatment clinic and research facility in downtown Phoenix, which could be
  operational at the Phoenix Biomedical Campus by 2013. The 250,000-
  square-foot outpatient cancer center will potentially be located at North
  Seventh and East Filmore streets. Read more>>

The UA College of Medicine-Phoenix in partnership with ASU could break ground on a 265,000-square-foot health sciences education building as soon as springtime. The larger facility will enable the school to increase the size of its medical training program and add offices and labs for interprofessional education and translational research.

Also reported are discussions taking place between the UA College of Medicine and Maricopa Integrated Health System to plan a new hospital near the campus and between UA College of Medicine and Phoenix Children's Hospital, which will open its new 632-bed hospital expansion on Thomas Road next to its existing facility that is slated for completion of Phase I by 2012.

Phoenix Children's Hospital Becomes Only Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center in State

ASU Nursing asthma  In October, Phoenix Children's Hospital's Trauma Center was verified
  as a Level I Pediatric Trauma Center by the American College of
  Surgeons' (ACS) Verification Review Committee. The 
  accomplishment makes the hospital's program the state's first and
                                              only ACS-verified Level I Pediatric Trauma Center. The benefits of a Pediatric Level I Trauma Center include 24-hour a day/7-day a week specialist coverage, in-house trauma surgeons, anesthesiologists, emergency medicine physicians and pediatric intensivists, constant assessment of care, education of care providers, and extensive community education including programs in injury and child abuse prevention. In addition, the new Level I pediatric trauma center is the only trauma center in Arizona with in-hospital pediatric surgeons and pediatric anesthesiologists. Read the full story (10-14-09 entry)>>

Barrow Neurological Institute Expands Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center

brain  On December 3, Muhammad Ali continued the fight, celebrating the launch
  of the nation's most comprehensive Parkinson's disease facility, the new
  Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center at Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix.
  With about 60,000 new cases diagnosed each year, there are currently one
  million Americans with Parkinson's disease. As of yet, there is no cure. Ali, who
  is a three-time Heavy Weight Boxing Champion and the most famous athlete
  in history, attended the grand opening event. He was diagnosed with the
  disease in 1984.

Physicians at the new 10,000 square-foot facility are expected to see about 1,600 new patients annually, double the current number, and thousands more patients and their families are expected to attend one of the center's numerous classes, support groups, or exercise activities. The original center has drawn individuals from across the United States since it opened in 1997. Patients not only see the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center's leading neurologists but also have access to Barrow's renowned neurosurgeons. The center offers care for many movement disorders, in addition to Parkinson's disease. Read more>>

GateWay Community College to Build Business Incubator for Bioscience and
Emerging Technologies

GateWay Community College has raised $4 million in grant funds that will be added to Maricopa County Community College District (MCCCD) bond funds of $2 million and used to construct a business incubator to house emerging technologies to include bioscience. The grant awards include $800,000 from the City of Phoenix; $3 million from the U.S. Department of Commerce, Economic Development Administration; and a corporate donation from Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Arizona. The incubator, with a $6 million project budget, will feature rentable research space to house early-stage companies. The space will be flexible to accommodate both wet and dry lab research, and tenants will receive a full array of small business start-up services. The incubator will not only benefit start-up businesses but also serve as a place for students to experience hands-on learning through internships and entrepreneurial educational programs.
