Toolkit for Working with Rural Volunteers
New Help for Small Organizations in Rural Communities
Now there is a new way of learning to work with rural volunteers, while being guided through the larger process of recruiting and retaining them, with a minimal amount of time, staff and funding.
With funding from the Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Wetlands, Oceans and Watersheds, the Office of Surface Mining (OSM) and Americorps Vista piloted a 3-year research project, on volunteerism, throughout Appalachia and the Rocky Mountain West.
Based on their experience, with thousands of volunteers, in hundreds of rural communities, it was clear that volunteers were important to the survival or organizations striving to improve local communities and environments. It was also clear that few tools were available to assist in overcoming the challenges of recruiting managing and retaining rural volunteers.
The OSM/Vista Teams project resulted in the creation of 'The Toolkit for Working with Rural Volunteers'. This is a toolkit for small organizations, those without a Volunteer Coordinator, a Development Officer or even a full-time Director - those that depend almost exclusively on volunteers. The Toolkit contains one-of-a-kind tools, needed by rural organizations, for building sustainable volunteer management infrastructures, and shares approaches to volunteer recruitment, management and retention that have proven successful in rural settings.
It is unlikely that you will ever discover more useful, tested information for rural community volunteers and it is all available online, at www.RuralVolunteer.org. |
