| Glutathione | | Find out why this little-known antioxidant is key to fighting toxicity and premature aging - and warding off chronic disease.
Gloota-what? Found in every cell in the body, glutathione protects the cell's engine, called the mitochondria, from bacteria and viruses as well as toxins.
Eat: lots of glutathione-rich foods, such as asparagus, spinach, avocado, squash, melons, grapefruit and peaches. Whenever possible, eat these foods raw or minimally heated, since heat - and microwaving - tends to destroy antioxidants.

Staying Healthy During Cold and Flu Season
| |
by Dr Asal Shalviri, Naturopath
When it comes to colds and flues, prevention is your best strategy. One of the key contributing factors that determine your susceptibility to catching a cold or flu is the strength of your immune system.
There are simple steps you can take to boost your immune system:
- Eat a balanced and nutritious diet. Consume a whole foods diet
balanced in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, beans, nuts, and seeds. - Take Vitamin D daily
- Drink fresh ginger tea regularly in fall and winter
- Take in some form of garlic daily
- Washing your hands regularly and thoroughly is one of the simplest ways to keep germs at bay. Avoid touching your face since germs often enter the body through the nose, eyes and mouth.
If you do start to feel sick, you should take action right away!

AcuDetox: Treating Addictions with Acupuncture
| |
by Dani Foster, R.Ac
Definition of Addiction:
"Any behavior with negative consequences that you are compelled to do, and that you get relief from, but can't give it up despite the negative consequences." - Gabor Mate
Addiction DOES involve the preoccupation with an object (drug, activity or goal), impaired control over the object, persistence or relapse, despite evidence of harm and dissatisfaction, irritability or intense craving when the object is not immediately available. Addiction DOES NOT demonstrate moral weakness, a character defect, or poor willpower. Addiction is not defined by frequency or duration, but by the impact.
In contrast to pharmaceutical addiction treatments, acupuncture treatment is able to focus on the underlying condition and will not result in a new addiction or cause side effects. Acupuncture treatment has been shown to increase production and function of many of the neurotransmitters that are important for maintenance of healthy brain chemistry, such as endorphins, serotonin and dopamine. Re-establishment of healthy brain chemistry results in a decrease of craving and associated symptoms of withdrawal (such as irritability, poor concentration, depression, etc).
AcuDetox treatments have been proven to be very effective in treating addictions to substances such as narcotics, alcohol and nicotine. Please click here to read the full article.
Please contact Reception for more information or to book in. Dani Foster is available by appointment for complimentary 15 minute consultations. |

Halloween: The Spookiest Part is the Sugar...
|
Huffington Post Article
Let's face it, as a kid; the best thing about Halloween (after dressing up, of course) is the candy. For one evening a year, children prowl our neighborhoods looking for something sweet to put in their pillow cases or plastic pumpkins, and we adults gladly oblige. Perhaps in an effort to make our home the coolest house on the block, we tend to purchase the "best" candy -- the chocolate ones, the king-size bars, the best selection. You think that's scary? What's scarier is actually reading the candy bar labels. Did you know that 15 popular candy bar brands contain 21 grams of sugar each?...Here's some information on exactly how much sugar is in some of our favourite treats and some helpful tips on how to minimize the sugar overload. Read the full article. Why is this important to know? It's the start of cold and flu season and sugar negatively effects the immune system:Consuming too much sugar suppresses immune system cells responsible for attacking bacteria. Even consuming just 75 to 100 grams of a sugar solution (about the same as in two 12-ounce sodas) reduces the ability of white blood cells to overpower and destroy bacteria. This effect is seen for at least a few hours after consuming a sugary drink.
