Greetings,
September is here and it's busy! For some, kids back in school, sports starting up and work routine getting back to normal. For others, fitness activities, healthier eating and overall personal maintenance plans are kicked up a notch again. This issue of our newsletter talks about some of those very topics; poor desk posture, concussions in teen athletes, acupuncture for overall health, an 8 week detox and weight loss program and more.
Our Complimentary Monthly Seminars are returning with our first taking place on Thursday September 27th @ 6.45pm. Dr Asal Shalviri will be discussing Healthy Weight Loss and her very successful 8 Week Detox and Weight Loss Program. Start her program early October and you'll be done early December before most of the seasonal festivities begin. Perfect timing! Make sure you RSVP as this one will fill up fast!
You've probably heard of the Innovative Fitness Canuck Place Adventure Challenge. It's coming again soon and on September 15th our own Dr Ryan Flatt and Brad Greenwood are competing. Their team "FLATT and the BRAT" are looking for donations. Check out the link and if you're considering donating to this worthy cause please do so for their team!
Cheers, Monica

Introducing an 8 Week Detox and Weight Loss Program
by Dr Asal Shalviri, Naturopath
There are many different paths to weight loss. While some are healthier than others, most weight-loss plans either don't work or offer only minor, usually temporary, benefits. There are plenty of "rules and counting" diets, diet drugs, high-protein programs, canned shakes, and other fads that might enable you to lose some weight for a period of time. The problem that all these diet programs share is that you can't stay on them forever.
Healthy weight loss isn't just about a "diet" or "program". It's about an ongoing lifestyle that includes long-term changes in daily eating and exercise habits. Read the full article here. Dr Shalviri's weight loss program is designed to help you change your eating habits and teach you to eat in such a way that you can comfortably sustain those changes for a lifetime. This diet plan and recipes are designed for everybody and those who have failed to lose the desired weight on other plans. The program includes weekly visits with Dr Shalviri for acupuncture, meal planning, and support. RSVP for our Seminar on Thursday September 27th @ 6.45pm to learn more about the program. Also at this time, Dr Shalviri will be discussing the option of starting a group session the first week of October with support sessions such as healthy meal preparation. Come on out and bring a friend or family member. Please contact Reception for more information or to book in/ RSVP. |
| Effects of Poor Posture | |
by Kelsy Kunzli, RMT
As a Registered Massage Therapist the most common injury or complaint we see is back, neck, shoulder pain and tension. Majority of the time these are a result of poor posture. Poor posture usually means that your head is forward on your neck, your shoulders are rolled forward and your back is rounded. These positions will place different stresses on the body. For example:
- The joints and discs in your spine are designed to withstand pressures that are placed upon them in the neutral position. Once the joints aren't in neutral the pressures will increase on these joints causing degeneration and irritation...Click here for more

| Concussions and Young Athletes | |
by Dr Ryan Flatt, Chiropractor
With the start of another school year and the coming of fall there will be a marked increase in sport participation by young athletes. With increased participation and activity there is seen an increase in injuries. Recently attention has been focused on sports-related concussions (SRC), in part due to the untimely concussion-related deaths of high school athletes, cognitive problems in professional football players, and head injuries sidelining professional hockey players for extended periods of time. Understanding the signs and symptoms of SRC and appropriate return-to-play recommendations is imperative to the safety of all athletes and young athletes in particular.
Chiropractors - particularly those who focus on sport or pediatric populations - are frequently an integral part of the health-care team in monitoring, assessing and caring for young players recovering from a concussion injury. Read more.
The following is a great video that describes what happens to the brain, the signs and symptoms of a concussion and the proper procedures that need to be taken before somebody can return to activity after a concussion. Watch video.
For more information or to book in with one of our Chiropractors please contact Reception.

| Myth: Acupuncture is only successful for treating pain | |
by Dani Foster, R.Ac
All too often, patients only seek acupuncture treatment for chronic or acute physical pain. This conceived scope of acupuncture is promoted by the media, social contacts and other health practitioners. An important reason for this is that acupuncture has been shown to affect the body in easily understandable physical ways such as decreasing inflammation, promoting circulation and regulating nervous response. It is important to note, however, that this is by no means the only time you should visit your acupuncturist.
Although it is not as commonly known, Acupuncture is also well documented

as being a successful form of treatment for many internal conditions of the body, especially those of prolonged duration or idiopathic nature (unknown cause). Examples of such conditions include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and other gastrointestinal complaints
- Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS)
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Insomnia
- Hormonal dysfunction
- Menstrual irregularities
- Infertility
Please contact Reception for more information or to book in. Dani is available by appointment for complimentary 15 minute consultations. |

Practitioner Spotlight: Kelsy Kunzli, RMT
| |
I grew up in North Delta.
My fondest childhood memory was having ice cube fights with my parents and sisters.
I love to spend my free time reading, cooking, running and my newest activity cycling.
Movies that I like to watch over and over are the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
My biggest pet peeve is loud chewing.
You might be surprised to know that I'm a huge neat freak and have some OCD. For example I can't go to sleep unless I know my remote controls are lined up biggest to smallest in a perfectly straight line.
When I indulge I like to eat an Oreo Skor Blizzard or a burger and fries!
My most favorite place travelled is Cinque Terre, Italy. Everyone needs to see this place.
I chose a career in massage therapy when I started seeing another RMT for a disc herniation. I had currently been working in an office and was really unhappy and looking for something more. Choosing to be an RMT was one of the best decisions I've ever made and I absolutely love my job!
