Summer Recipe

August 2012
Staff BBQ
Greetings,

August is full of outdoor activities for the health enthusiasts, weekend warriors and anyone just wanting to enjoy the sunshine while it's here. Don't forget to keep up with your usual maintenance routine involving stretching, proper fueling and "tune-ups". I have included a few articles focusing on these important topics for you.

We have a bit of moving and shaking at Performance this month. We say a warm farewell to Brittany in reception and wish her all the best. Sadly also moving on is Alexandra Herold, our Acupuncturist. She is moving back to her home land, Germany for an extended period of time. Alle die beste! For patients under her care, not to worry! We are happy to announce that we have brought on board Dani Foster, Registered Acupuncturist and she'll be staring with us on August 20th. Alexandra asked me to mention that she will be entrusting her patients' files and care with Dani.

Lastly, a big shout out to our own Dr Ryan Flatt, who will be competing in Subaru Ironman Canada on August 26 in Penticton. This is his second Ironman and he'll be looking to beat his time of 12:01:18. Good luck!!

Cheers, Monica

Massage Therapy for TMJ

by Rebecca Stewart, RMT

TMJ is short for the Temporomandibular Joint. It is the jaw joint where your mandible(jaw bone) meets and hinges to the skull, allowing movement for us to speak and chew.

When Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction occurs , the result is jaw pain and TMJ clicking. Many people will experience some form of jaw pain in their lifetime. The Cause of TMJ disorder can be trauma (car accident, or a fall) or grinding (at night or due to stress). Many people carry tension and stress in the TMJ, subconsciously we clench and grind during stressful times. Not only is this bad for our teeth, it can result in other symptoms as well. Tension in the surrounding muscles of the TMJ can cause referral pain. Thus creating headaches, neck, jaw, tooth and even ear pain.

How can Massage Therapy help??

BC RMTs are trained to asses and treat TMJ disorder. Using techniques such as Myofascial release, soft tissue manipulation (externally or intraoraly with consent), and joint mobilizations. These techniques will help the patient to restore normal TMJ function, range of motion and optimal soft tissue health, while decreasing jaw pain and associated symptoms.

All six of our Registered Massage Therapists are trained in treating TMJ. Please contact Reception for more information or to book in.

Preconception Health

by Dr Asal Shalviri, Naturopath

Before becoming pregnant, both parents should work to optimize their health. This entails addressing any current health issues and also changing any habits that don't contribute to a healthy pregnancy.

A preconception health care program should be started at a minimum of 4 to 6 Fertilized egg months prior to conceptions. Of course this depends on the health history of the individuals involved. Preconception health is as important for men as it is for women.

Preconception Health care can also help to decrease the risk of miscarriage which at present effects 1 in 5 of all conceptions.

Read the full article here with Dr Shalviri's suggestion for a Naturopathic approach to addressing these common concerns.

"This article answers many questions people have in regards to stretching including when to static stretch and dynamic stretch and the importance of warming up and warming up effectively. There's many links throughout the article that give m
ore depth to the comments. I would encourage everyone to read and go thru this article. I have to agree with the comments in this article. Sometimes it is hard to change something that is ingrained in us from birth and that is so habitual such as static stretching but as research shows that may be a thing of the past."
Feel free to email me questions about this and I will answer.  Dr Garret Kusch, Chiropractor and former professional soccer player.
