Greetings!
May is around the corner! Running season is upon us with the Sun Run taking place last month, BMO Half/Marathon this month and Scotia Bank Half/Marathon in June. In recognition of this we'd like to give the runners and sports enthusiasts out there a few tips. Gardening injuries/strains are common this time of year too. We found an excellent article on prevention to share.
May 1 - 7 is also Spinal Health Week. The BC Chiropractors Association is supporting this event by reminding the public of their already very successful prevention and safety campaigns such as "Think Twice, Lift Once", "Pack it Light, Wear it Right" and "After the Crash." They have created a Daily Exercise Sheet with a Posture Analysis that you can do with your whole family. More information here and also shared below.
This month we have 2 complimentary seminars for you! Thursday May 10th @ 7pm Spring Detoxification and Nutrition. Then on Wednesday May 23rd @ 6.30pm we will present on The Biomechanics of Running.
Cheers, Monica
Wellness Coordinator and Office Manager

Life's Balancing Act on the Foot Dr Doug Stewart, Ph.D (Biomechanics)
Dr Kusch recently came across this article and wanted to share these two points specifically. 1. "I have come to recognize that most aches and pains are related to biomechanics. In this article I discuss what you can do about avoiding injuries, and especially about the foot's role in avoiding them, the flip side of injury being efficient mechanics. Two main ingredients make up mechanical health: good posture, and moving in a full connected way from the center of your body. A third, variety, helps you achieve the first two." 2. "Under no circumstances that I can think of, will your feet be healthy if you walk or run barefoot for any period of time on man-made hard, flat surfaces. This includes minimalist shoes, which allow you to function as if you were barefoot. I agree that shoes have become too cushioned and insulate us from our environment. Nevertheless, some of us tried the experiment of minimalist shoes back in the late '60s, when we used to run in black canvas Keds with a minimalist crepe rubber sole. Our feet lost some of their arch and spring, and we are suffering from that abuse today. You will be able to run successfully in a minimalist shoe if you stick to softer, supportive, randomly changing surfaces, and if you have inherited sufficiently strong ligaments to maintain good foot posture. Otherwise, you're asking for trouble." To read the full article click here. Do you find this topic interesting? Come out to our complimentary Biomechanics of Running Seminar on Wednesday May 23rd for a full presentation and discussion. Please contact Reception to RSVP. |

Foot Stretches for Runners
Foot and ankle stretches improve the joints' mobility and prevent stiffness that can inhibit your ability to move. Stretches also help prevent knee and shin pain and plantar fasciitis when you run or climb stairs, according to physical therapist Chris Frederick, co-author of "Stretch to Win." When you stretch your feet, incorporate your legs and hips in some of the stretches.
Pictured here: Yoga pose Downward Dog. You should feel a stretch in your lower back, buttocks, the back of your legs, heels and the bottoms of your feet.
Lance Armstrong's Livestrong website offers some great stretches for your reference:

Acupuncture Treatments for Common Runner's Injuries
No one likes to think about injuries, and by wearing proper running shoes, avoiding overtraining, eating the correct foods and practicing good stretching techniques, many runners are able to avoid injury. But if you run often enough and long enough, the occasional injury is unavoidable. Our Registered Acupuncturist Alexandra recommends that if you become injured you might need to consider acupuncture as a non invasive, non pharmaceutical method of treatment. You may be amazed at how quickly you recover and how relaxed you feel after an acupuncture treatment.
Common running injuries that can be treated with Acupuncture:
Plantar Fasciitis Achilles Tendonitis Ankle Sprain Shin Splints IT Band Syndrome Hip/Low Back or Knee Pain
For the full article and more information about each of the injuries about please click here.
Alexandra has a testimonial to share with you from a runner she treated.
Please contact Reception if you'd like to book in with Alexandra Herold, RAc.

Myer's Cocktail
Now offered by Dr Asal Shalviri
A Myers cocktail is an intravenous push that consists of a combination of vitamins and minerals. Practitioner Spotlight Get to know Dr Garret Kusch Father, Chiropractor and Soccer Player Extraordinaire
1. What is one thing most people don't know about you? Most people don't know that I am a Christian or that I cry easily at movies. 2. If you could learn to do anything, what would it be? I believe you can learn anything you want to so anything I've wanted to learn I have. But if I needed to pick something it would be to be still in my mind. To truly be able to think of nothing. 3. What is your all time favorite movie? I like so many. From "Dumb and Dumber" to "Terminator" to "The Pursuit of Happiness". 4. What interested you in becoming a Chiropractor Initially it was its ability to help people and provide an alternative, natural, holistic option to mainstream medicine. Now it has become so much more to me. It has allowed me to conceptualize a better health care system. It allows me to share what I have learned with others to improve their overall health and improve their life. I get excited as I continually learn about the intimate connection between the physical, psychological and biochemical components of an individual and sharing that with someone so they can take control of their health and life. I better stop now or this newsletter could get really long!!!!!! Click here to read the full interview. |
