Why Detoxification is Important
Dr Asal Shalviri, Naturopath Doctor
We are exposed to toxins in our everyday lives. Detoxification treatments become necessary when the body's natural detoxification systems become overwhelmed. Detox should be done on regular basis especially in Spring and Fall, in order to improve health and eliminating chronic symptoms. The liver is a complex organ that plays a key role in most metabolic processes, especially in detoxification. Liver is the premier cleaning and removal station for both internal as well as external toxins.
Benefits of detoxification
- Improve symptoms of weight gain, low energy, joint pain, headache, general pain, PMS, unhealthy skin, anxiety and irritability, gas and constipation.
- Help prevent diseases, especially when someone has had a prolonged exposure to chemicals or hormones (such as oral contraceptives)
- Treat diseases such as fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, digestive disorde
rs, arthritis, multiple chemical sensitivity, and Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
Several methods of detoxification have been proved to be effective and are being used by Naturopathic doctors.

Seasonal Allergies and Naturopathic Medicine
Dr Asal Shalviri, Naturopathic Doctor
Seasonal allergies are the result of an overactive immune system, reacting to something in the environment (e.g. tree pollen, mold spores, etc.) that the body perceives as threat even though it is completely harmless. For most, the characteristic hay fever symptoms of headache, sneezing, runny nose, nasal congestion and itchy eyes are not overly debilitating on their own-but they are relentlessly annoying, and can culminate in a lifelong battle for respiratory sufficiency. How can a Naturopathic Doctor help? Please click here to continue reading and find out. Take control of your allergies! For more information or to book in with Naturopath Dr Shalviri please contact Reception. |
| Product Spotlight: Quercetin
As Dr Shalviri mentioned above, quercetin is an effective source for relief from seasonal allergy symptoms. It is found in many often-consumed foods, including apples, onions, teas, berries, vegetables of the cabbage family, seeds, and nuts. Quick scientific explanation in layman's terms: Quercetin has a strong affinity for mast cells and basophils. It tends to stabilize their cell membranes, preventing them from spilling their pro-inflammatory, allergy-symptom-causing load of histamine/serotonin into the surrounding blood and tissue in response to the IgE antibody. And without the release of these potent inflammatory mediators, the familiar misery of allergies simply will not occur, even though you've inhaled the pollen, animal hair, or whatever normally triggers allergy attacks.
"I keep quercetin on hand at home for friends who are allergic to my dog. His bristly fur tends to bring out hives in those who choose to actively play with him. A quick dose and within a half hour the symptoms subside. No drowsy side effe cts like you would get with an antihistamine." Monica
At Performance we carry the Thorne Research brand of quercetin called Quercetone. For more information or to purchase please contact Reception. |
Eating Seasonally - SPRING
In the northern hemisphere spring is the time for new beginnings as the earth awakens from its winter slumber. As the earth rejuvenates itself you're encouraged to enjoy the wide variety of green vegetables that become available this time of year. As the days get longer and the weather begins to warm, start to also enjoy lighter cuisine. That means more lightly cooked, lightly processed foods, which are lighter in calories, and leaner in terms of fat. And if you don't want to cook, salads are a great way to enjoy the nutritional benefits from a variety of spring vegetables with a minimal amount of effort, while keeping the calor ie counts down. Please click here for the list of foods and their health benefits.
Enjoy them raw or lightly cooked. They will leave you feeling refreshed, renewed and revitalized!

Cancer Prevention and Food?
Anti-Angiogenesis explained
What is Anti-Angiogenesis? In laymen's terms, Anti-Angiogenesis is a cancer therapy that consists of intake of drugs or natural foods that deprive cancerous tumors of blood supplies. In other words, Anti-Angiogenesis starve tumors to death by choking off blood supplies to them. Tumors rely heavily on uninterrupted blood supply and if there is a deprivation, cancerous cells do what they failed to do due to modifications to their genetic code - die. William Li presents a new way to think about treating cancer and other diseases. The crucial first (and best) step: Eating cancer-fighting foods that cut off the blood supply lines to tumors and beat cancer at its own game.
