MEI ZEN (means Beautiful Person) is an Acupuncture protocol based on Traditional Chinese Medicine that revitalizes and rejuvenates the body and can support you with your weight loss efforts.

The Mei Zen Abdominal Acupuncture System utilizes an ancient needling technique that is very superficial. The needling brings Qi and blood flow to the surface. Since this system is based on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TMC), the Mei Zen practitioner also uses points on the body to complete the balancing of energy. This results in an overall rejuvenating effect of body, mind and spirit.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, balance of energy creates the ideal weight and optimal health. The Mei Zen Abdominal Protocol is based on these principles and works by balancing the body's energy and building the core Qi. It is important when undertaking any weight loss program to understand that good digestion plays an integral role in achieving success. This system's approach facilitates that goal.

Diet according to Traditional Chinese Food Therapy and Lifestyle are also evaluated and addressed.

Metabolic Syndrome
Dr Asal Shalviri, ND

One in four Canadians suffer from metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions that occur together, increasing your risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes.

A diagnosis of metabolic syndrome can be made when an individual meets at least 3 of the following criteria:

  1. High fasting plasma glucose (>6.1 mmol/l)
  2. Hypertriglyceridemia (>1.7 mmol/l)
  3. Low HDL cholesterol (<1.0 mmol/l- males, <1.3 mmol/l-females)
  4. Hypertension (blood pressure >130/85)
  5. Central obesity (waist circumference of >102 cm- males, 88cm-females)

If you have metabolic syndrome you are threemetabolic syndrome times more likely to develop coronary heart disease, which is the leading cause of death in Canada. You are also three times more likely to have a stroke and five times more like to develop type II diabetes. In all of these cases, chronic inflammation, high blood pressure, high levels of triglycerides or cholesterol lead to development of plaque/clots or build-up along the wall of arterial blood vessels. The vessels slowly narrow over time until eventually there is a severe reduction in blood flow (ischemia or MI), or no blood flow at all (stroke). Please click to read the full article.

Weight Loss and Achieving Optimal Health Dr Asal Shalviri, ND

There are many different paths to weight loss. While some are healthier than others, most weight-loss plans either don't work or offer only minor, and usually temporary, benefits. There are plenty of "rules and counting" diets, diet drugs, high-protein programs, canned shakes, and other fads that might enable you to lose some weight for a period of time. The problem that all these diet programs share is that you can't stay on them forever.

Why Fad Diets Don't Work?

When a macronutrient (carbohydrate, protein or fat) is withheld, the body reacts by going into starvation mode. In this mode, the body alters its metabolism in order to produce sugar, the only nutrient used by the brain for energy. In mild starvation, a state induced by fad diets, the body breaks down muscle tissue in addition to fat in order to liberate amino acids, which are then converted to sugar. Thus, mild starvation leads to the depletion of muscle and not only fat...
