Introducing Kelsy Kunzli
Registered Massage Therapist

Kelsy

Kelsy's interest in massage therapy began 6 years ago when she herniated a disc in her lumbar spine producing severe sciatic pain. This went on for many months until she began to see a physiotherapist and registered massage therapist. Through these two therapies she was able to figure out the cause of the injury and prevent it from happening again. It was during this experience that Kelsy found a connection to her body and a passion and interest in helping other people do the same.

Kelsy graduated from West Coast College of Massage Therapy and has continued her education in courses on Facilitated Stretching and Human Anatomy Pro-section of the Lower Extremity. She uses her knowledge to educate her patients and believes that they need to be involved in the treatment of their injuries. Kelsy will help her patients not just by addressing the symptoms but by finding the cause of their injuries. From personal experience she understands the importance of doing therapeutic exercises along with massage therapy. Therefore she will teach her patients stretching and strengthening exercises that will help them achieve proper posture and optimal movement patterns.

Kelsy has experience treating a number of conditions including: ligament sprains, muscles strains, frozen shoulder, tendonitis, chronic neck pain, chronic low back pain, plantar fascitis, sports injuries and overuse injuries. She uses a variety of techniques to treat a condition effectively including myofascial release, trigger point release, swedish massage, therapeutic exercise and the most recent addition, facilitated stretching.

Kelsy in the clinic Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday as of January 6th.

Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis

A big part of many exercise programs is goal setting. How do you set a goal without a proper benchmark. We can help...BIA

What is BIA or Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis? A new tool to help you to reach your health goals. Knowing your Basal Metabolic Rate alone would help with setting your caloric intake versus energy output for your goal of weight loss or gain.

Our Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) machine analyzes your:
  •     body composition
  •     cellular function
  •     fluid levels
  •     caloric requirements (BMR)
Research has shown that body composition and a normal distribution of tissue and fluid in the body correlates directly to a continuum of health, ranging from mortality and morbidity to immunity, longevity, high function, and athletic performance.

You can book yourself in anytime for a BIA test. The appointment is only about 15 minutes and you will get a detailed analysis at the end. Please contact Reception for to book your appointment and pretest preparation info.

Source and Nutritional Content

Naturopathic Medicine & Athletes Dr Asal Shalviri, ND

Naturopathic medicine is the perfect choice for athletes. Simple lifestyle choices can optimize performance and endurance, as well as minimize illness and the risk of injury. Should an injury occur, naturopathic therapies speed up healing time and reduce the chance of re-injury.

Areas that a Naturopath can work with an Athlete on:

Nutrition:

Food is the fuel for athletes to perform. Food also contains the nutrients the body needs to recover from training and rebuild its structure. But it is not only what an athlete eats that is important, it is also what his body absorbs...

Anti-inflammatory diet:

The anti-inflammatory diet focuses on consuming whole, natural foods that allow the body to maintain balanced hormone levels and to use fat and carbohydrates as the primary energy sources. Consuming anti-inflammatory foods that are rich in trace nutrients, vitamins and minerals optimize energy levels and reduce tissue inflammation that can prevent proper recovery...

Immune support:

Over-training and stress can cause immune system weakness. Botanical medicine and nutritional supplements have shown to work well for managing stress and immune system. Intravenous nutrient infusion (See Myers article) of the most essential vitamins and minerals can also be used to provide potent boost to the immune system.

Overtraining syndrome:

Over-training syndrome is a common condition among athletes, particularly endurance athletes. If the intensity of training is increased beyond the body's ability to adapt, and if a full recovery is not made, training actually becomes a long-term cause of stress on the body. The primary cause of over-training is usually a lack of rest and recovery in the training program...

Sign and symptoms of overtraining are:

  • General fatigue
  • Loss of motivation
  • Depression, anxiety
  • Loss of strength

Sport acupuncture:

There are three main areas of sports medicine in which acupuncture and related therapies can offer great benefits: treatment of sport injuries; prevention of sport injuries; and athletic performance enhancement.

Acupuncture for prevention and treatment of sport injuries:

Acupuncture is used to help decrease swelling, spasm and inflammation. Additionally, it is used to control pain, increase range of motion and accelerate healing time. Because of its broad range of applications, acupuncture can benefit sport injuries at any stage: to prevent, to treat acute pain, and to address conditions that make athletes vulnerable to re-injury...

Performance enhancement:

Acupuncture helps athletes' performance by increasing their strength, endurance, and mental clarity...

Myer's CocktailMyers
Now offered by Dr Asal Shalviri

A Myers cocktail is an intravenous push that consists of a combination of vitamins and minerals. The main reasons for injection the vitamins and minerals intravenously are to bypass digestion, so that the levels of nutrients in the blood stream are temporarily increased and to achieve plasma concentration not obtainable by oral administration.

Myer's cocktails are popular among athletes. For example, marathon runners commonly receive a Myer's cocktail the week preceding their marathon and then again after the marathon to help speed recovery and avoid a down-turn in their training or immune function due to severe exertion.

Benefits:

Most people experience an increase in energy, improved mind clarity, decreased depression and anxiety, improved mood, faster recovery times, and less illness.

Conditions that my improve with Myer's Cocktail:

  • Chronic fatigue syndrome
  • Chronic depression
  • Acute or chronic muscle spasm
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Migraine headaches-often within minutes
  • Tension headaches
  • Seasonal allergic rhinitis
  • Acute viral illness/colds
  • Athletes who need quick recovery for athletic events
For more information or to book in with
Dr Shalviri
please contact Reception. Myers appointments are billed as Naturopathic appointments at a fee of $75 plus tax per session.
Nutrition: Power Plants

Ginseng is valued for its bitter, human-shaped root that has been clinically shown to prevent colds and increase physical stamina. It is an adaptogen, meaning that it kicks in when you need an increase in resistance to physical or biological stress. Therapeutic chemicals called ginsenosides rev up the production of antibodies and immune system cells to prevent viral infection. For a pre-emptive immune boost, take the dried root or extracts in two to three week cycles, but for no longer than three continuous months without advice from a health care provider.

Cranberries are packed with antioxidants that help offset the oxidative stress associated with running. Researchers agree that the anthocyanin content prevents bacteria from attaching to membranes in the mouth and digestive tract, while vitamin C increases the production of white blood cells and antibodies. The best way to take cranberry is by drinking 100 per cent juice. It's too tart to drink straight, but it makes a refreshing drink when diluted.

See the recipe Quinoa Cranberry Muffins to incorporate these two super plants/foods into your diet.
