November 2011 Issue

Fall Leaves

Greetings!

We've been treated to a fairly mild and sunny November so far but it feels like our true Winter is right around the corner! Many of you stay active all year long and we would like to offer you some support. For the month of November our clinic focus is on The Athlete. Weekend warrior, child or teen, competitive athlete or mild enthusiast; you can all benefit from a "tune-up" and perhaps our seminar is just the thing for you.

November is also "Movember" and Brad, Ryan and Garret have formed a team to help with the cause. See below for more details.

Coming up in a few weeks is our annual Patient Appreciation Christmas Social. Dig out your favourite ugly festive sweater and mark the date in your calendar. Thursday December 15th from 5 - 8pm.

Last but not least, we'd like to welcome Brittany to our Reception team.

Cheers, Monica

Injured? Now what?

Dr Garret Kusch

Many people nowadays are faced with the common dilemma after sustaining an injury. Who do I go see? One friend says, "You gotta see my chiro", another pipes up and says, "Physio is the way to go', and yet another says, "That's a soft tissue injury go see a massage therapist". So who is right? Well, in actual fact they all are.

This is a common question I am asked when someone injures themselves. Who do I see? There are a few things to take into account yet the real question is who do you trust? In health care, like other service focused sectors, it's all about who you trust. There are just as many really good chiropractors, massage therapists, acupuncturists, naturopaths, physios etc as there are bad ones. Just like there are good and bad mechanics. So it's about who you trust mainly. Some chiropractors could out do any MD when it comes to a knee exam and providing accurate diagnoses. So would I go see an MD if I hurt my knee or would I go to my chiropractor? That's a rhetorical question. It's a matter of training and a matter of experience. A good health care provider will know what to do within their scope of practice when it comes to evaluating injuries. They will refer when needed and treat when they can. This all starts with a good diagnosis.

 Garret

At Performance we all have the necessary training and experience to effectively handle an injury. So where do you go if you sustain an injury?

Well that's easy. Performance.

Myer's Cocktail
Now offered by Dr Asal Shalviri

A Myers cocktail is an intravenous push that consists of a combination of vitamins and minerals. The main reasons for injection the vitamins and minerals intravenously are to bypass digestion, so that the levels of nutrients in the blood stream are temporarily increased and to achieve plasma concentration not obtainable by oral administration. Thus, an increase in the levels of nutrients in the bloodstream allows an increase of these nutrients in the cells. This gets the cells kick started and energy is produced more efficiently in those cells.

Myer's cocktails are popular among athletes. For example, marathon runners commonly receive a Myer's cocktail the week preceding their marathon and then again after the marathon to help speed recovery and avoid a down-turn in their training or immune function due to severe exertion.

Benefits:

Most people experience an increase in energy, improved mind clarity, decreased depression and anxiety, improved mood, faster recovery times, and less illness.

Conditions that my improve with Myer's Cocktail:

  • Chronic fatigue syndrome
  • Chronic depression
  • Acute or chronic muscle spasm
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Migraine headaches-often within minutes
  • Tension headaches
  • Seasonal allergic rhinitis
  • Acute viral illness/colds
  • Athletes who need quick recovery for athletic events

Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis

A big part of many exercise programs is goal setting. How do you set a goal without a proper benchmark. We can help...

What is BIA or Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis? A new tool to help you to reach your health goals. Knowing your Basal Metabolic Rate alone would help with setting your caloric intake versus energy output for your goal of weight loss or gain.

Our Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) machine analyzes your:
  •     body composition
  •     cellular function
  •     fluid levels
  •     caloric requirements (BMR)
Research has shown that body composition and a normal distribution of tissue and fluid in the body correlates directly to a continuum of health, ranging from mortality and morbidity to immunity, longevity, high function, and athletic performance.

You can book yourself in anytime for a BIA test. The appointment is only about 15 minutes and you will get a detailed analysis at the end. Please contact Reception for to book your appointment and pretest preparation info.
