8 Week Weight Loss Challenge

with Dr Asal ShalviriWeight

Dr Shalviri has put together a program to help shed those summer splurge pounds and gently detox. This past Spring she had several people complete her weight loss program with excellent results encompassing MIND, BODY and SPIRIT. One of the most common things we heard from patients was how easy the program was to follow and stick to. Patients not only lost weight, they also reduced inflammation and therefor pain, felt more alert, energetic and happier all around. See these patient testimonials to hear their experience with the program.

Her program combines:

  •     weekly counselling support
  •     weekly acupuncture
  •     supplements for detoxification and support
  •     meal plans and recipes using clean, whole foods

The program is individualized starting with a full intake and assessment of your current health status. You will be regularly weighed, measured and tested by Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis. (Please see below for a full description of the BIA.) Then you return weekly for acupuncture and dietary counselling.

You can purchase the full package for the discounted rate of approximately $950 (a savings of $200 and can be split over 2 payments) and you will be given all of the tools you need to get started. *Price will vary slightly based on your own personal program. Then all that is left is your own grocery shopping as Dr Shalviri even supplies the meal plans and recipes.

Dr Shalviri will be holding an information night on Thurs October 13th

  • The Program/Challenge is open to patients and/or your friends/family.
  • Refer someone who joins the program/challenge and you will get your first acupuncture session for free.
  • We will also be offering a group challenge with a prize if we have 4 or more people sign up together as a group.
  • The prize is a 50% refund on the total cost of your supplements (before tax)!!

If you decide to join the challenge, your program would start on:

Fri 14th, Sat 15th or Tues 18th

Please contact Reception to RSVP for the information night.

Chiropractic & The Immune System

Dr Ryan Flatt

Even though you are not sick, your body may be acquiring misalignments of the spine (subluxations) that are interfering with your nervous system and thus your immune system.

Regular chiropractic check-ups can help you to maintain a healthy immune system and stave off illnesses or allergies. A chiropractic adjustment will restore the balance of your nervous system and restore the flow of energy and information throughout the body.

So you have a cold or flu...when should you have massage therapy treatment?
Lorraine Hardie, RMT

Did you know that the average adult contracts 2-4 cold infections per year? The common cold is usually a mild infection and takes one to two weeks to recover. So how do you know if you're contagious? Although symptoms of a cold occur anywhere from 1-5 days after initial contact, you are contagious within hours of initial contact to the virus.

Many people ask when to come in for a massage if they are fighting a cold.

It is best to avoid massage therapy within the first week of a cold to help reduce the chance of spreading the virus. If you are suffering from a runny nose or bad cough it is also best to wait until those symptoms clear up before booking in for a treatment. Once the cold has past, your massage Lorraine Hardietherapist can help relieve any aches or pains left over such as sinus congestion and sore ribs from excessive coughing.

To book in for a treatment with Lorraine or any of our Registered Massage Therapists please contact reception.

Bioelectrical Impedance AnalysisBIA

What is BIA or Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis? A new tool to help you to reach your health goals. Knowing your Basal Metabolic Rate alone would help with setting your caloric intake versus energy output for your goal of weight loss or gain.

Our Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) machine analyzes your:
  •     body composition
  •     cellular function
  •     fluid levels
  •     caloric requirements (BMR)

Research has shown that body composition and a normal distribution of tissue and fluid in the body correlates directly to a continuum of health, ranging from mortality and morbidity to immunity, longevity, high function, and athletic performance.

You can book yourself in anytime for a BIA test. The appointment is only about 15 minutes and you will get a detailed analysis at the end. Please contact Reception for to book your appointment and pretest preparation info. Return to top.

Spotlight: Crimini Mushrooms

Like most mushrooms, crimini mushrooms can provide us with unique immune system support. But contrary to public belief, these common button-type mushrooms have recently been shown to surpass some of their more exotic mushroom counterparts (like shiitake or maitake mushrooms) in terms of immune system benefits. We've seen several recent studies that placed button mushrooms at the top of the mushroom list with respect to regulation of unwanted inflammation.

One cup of crimini mushrooms provides a good, very good, or excellent
Crimini Mushroom
source of 18 different vitamins, minerals, and antioxidant phytonutrients. To maximize their flavor and the retention of their nutrients it is important to not to overcook them.

Acupuncture improves Immunity

Alexandra Herold, Reg. Acupuncturist

Natural therapies are strong solutions to improve your immune functions. You should especially consider them as a preventive tool, before you get sick. But for some of us the immune system might already be affected and has to fight more serious disorders, such as: allergies, flues and auto-immune disorders or cancer.

Acupuncture in particular has a tremendous arsenal of ways to improve your body's defense system, from needling, to cupping, moxibustion, massage therapy and many more.

A study done by the American College of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine shows how Acupuncture can effectively strengthen your immune system, by improving baseline Natural Killer Cells activity. These cells destroy body cells that have become infected or become cancerous.

Vitamin C and Zinc

for Immune Boosting

Monica Frost, Holistic Nutritionist

Much has been written about the role of vitamin C in supporting the immune system, in part because it has been promoted as an immune stimulant by the noted scientist and Nobel Prize Laureate, Linus Pauling. Vitamin C appears to support a decrease in the length of time and severity of symptoms associated with upper respiratory viral infections, promote phagocytic cell functions, and support healthy T-cell function. Vitamin C also provides antioxidant activity to support healing at sites of inflammation.

An excellent food source of vitamin C is citrus fruit. Many vegetables are also excellent sources of vitamin C, such as fresh parsley, raw cauliflower, mustard greens and Romaine lettuce.

Vitamin C

Zinc is one of the minerals in food that
has received the most attention for its ability to support immune function. Zinc is a potent immunostimulant, and its deficiency can result in profound suppression of T-cell function. Children with severe zinc deficiencies show signs of growth retardation and susceptibility to infections. However, an excess of zinc has also shown negative effects on immune function and can inhibit the phagocytic cells (macrophages and neutrophils). So, maintaining adequate but not excessive levels of zinc is important. This is one reason food is such an excellent source of obtaining nutrition versus supplementation; food contains a balanced variety of the micronutrients whereas supplementation with individual nutrients can lead to too much of some and not enough of others.

Healthy levels of zinc can be provided by including the good food sources of zinc, such as boiled Swiss chard, collard greens, and both summer squash and winter squash, or the very good or excellent sources of zinc like lamb, raw crimini mushrooms and calf's liver in your diet.
