Digestive Disorders

by Dr Asal Shalviri, Naturopath

Next to the common cold, digestive problems are the most common reason people seek medical advice. More than 20 million Canadians suffer from digestive disorders every year. Constipation, heartburn, indigestion, gas, bloating, ulcers and IBS are some of the most common digestive problems in Canada.

"You are what you eat"; a simple age-old phrase that bears a lot truth. But it is not only what you eat that is important, it is also what you absorb. There is no question that healthy diet is necessary for proper digestion. However, if digestion is insufficient, even highly nutritious diet can't be absorbed and utilized by the body. This malabsorption will lead to long-term vitamin and mineral deficiency.

Chiropractic helps Digestive Disorders

Over $80 billion are spent each year on drugs

to relieve heartburn, acid reflux, bloating, gas,

irritable bowel, constipation, diarrhea and other

digestive disorders. These symptoms of abnormal digestive are becoming increasingly more prevalent in our society. Science and research have shown that chiropractic care offers a powerful solution to this modern-day epidemic.

The nervous system controls digestive function from several different regions. The vagus nerve which courses out of the brain stem and runs near the atlas bone innervates all the major organs of digestion and functions to stimulate the digestive process.

Other major areas controlling the pace of

digestion include the sympathetic nerves

coming out of the thoracic & lumbar regions

and the sacral parasympathetic nerve fibers.

Spinal misalignment in any of these regions

can lead to neurological compromise and altered digestive function.

The mechanisms of massage and effects on performance, muscle recovery and injury prevention.

by Carissa Wringe, RMT

Attention all athletes, weekend warriors, competition participants and new fitness fanatics!

In a fitness-focused community like South Surrey, massage therapy is a field that is growing in popularity quicker than we can keep up with. Benefits to the active individual in performance from both pre and post-event sports massage are being researched. From what is already known, massage therapy helps to prevent muscle tearing, realign scar tissue from chronic soft tissue injury, which may prevent acute injury during an event. It maintains healthy muscle and joint range of motion, and has a psychologically positive reaction within the body to decrease fatigue, delayed-onset-muscle-soreness, swelling, and stiffness.

Here's an excerpt from an abstract on some new areas of interest for massage therapy research.

"Many coaches, athletes and sports medicine personnel hold the belief, based on observations and experiences, that massage can provide several benefits to the body...Click to read the full article.

Digestion: Enzymes 101

By Monica Frost, Holistic Nutritionist

The reactions which enzymes stimulate are essential to the life process. Hundreds of thousands of enzyme reactions take place in your body each minute. The best way to insure adequate enzyme activity is to provide our bodies with the building blocks needed to make those enzymes. These building blocks are components of the foods we eat: amino acids (from proteins), carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals. In some circumstances dietary enzyme supplementation can also prove beneficial through the use of digestive enzymes. (See Product Spotlight on SpectraZyme.)

Causes of Enzyme Depletion

  • Pesticides and chemicals
  • Hybridization and genetic engineering of foods
  • Bovine growth hormone (BGH) used in livestock growing
  • Pasteurization
  • Irradiated food
  • Excess intake of unsaturated and hydrogenated fats
  • Cooking food at high temperatures, thus destroying the enzymes
  • Microwaving
  • Radiation and electromagnetic fields
  • Fluoridated water
  • Heavy metals
  • Mercury amalgam dental fillings
  • Root canals
Foods that contain a healthy dose of enzymes: sprouts, fresh green vegetables, miso paste, unpasteurized sauerkraut,  avocados, papayas, pineapples, bananas and mangoes.

Chewing your food thoroughly and limiting the amount of cold liquids that you drink with your food will also help with enzyme action when you're eating. A tablespoon of unpasteurized sauerkraut or sipping warm miso with your meal has historically been used for good digestion.
