Greetings!
Spring has sprung and I'm sure you're feeling the benefits of longer days, more sunshine and perhaps even renewed interest in your health and wellness goals. Our practitioners have some programs coming out to help you with working towards those goals.
With Spring also comes running clinics and races like the Vancouver Sun Run. Do you enjoy running but it causes little aches and pains that you don't normally feel? Orthotics can be one solution to these symptoms. Many of you will already know about custom orthotics and use them everyday. Our Chiropractors do a computerized gait scan and analysis to match many of their patients with Footmaxx orthotics.
We will be running an OPEN HOUSE on Saturday April 16th from 12 to 2pm for anyone who wants to come down for a complimentary Gait Scan.
See below for more information on Custom Orthotics and a patient testimonial.

Spring Weight Loss and Detox: 8 week program
Spring is a time of rebirth and renewal. Green shoots emerge from the ground, animals feed on them and shed the fat they've accumulated during the winter from eating nuts and seeds. If we follow nature's cycles and cleanse our bodies we will feel lighter, amazingly vibrant, energized, and rejuvenated. Regular cleansing helps prevent many degenerative diseases, which come from congestion and stagnation in the body. By avoiding harmful foods, eating a lighter, nutrient dense diet, consuming more liquids and fibre, and making sure that our elimination is up to

par we allow our bodies to get rid of accumulated toxins.
Dr Shalviri has put together a program to help shed those winter pounds and gently detox. Her program combines:
- meal plans and recipes using clean, whole foods
- weekly counselling support
- weekly acupuncture
- supplements for detoxification and support
The program is individualized starting with a full intake and assessment of your current health status. You will be regularly weighed, measured and tested by Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis. Then you return weekly for acupuncture and dietary counselling.
You can purchase the full package for the discounted rate of approximately $995 (a savings of $200) and you will be given all of the tools you need to get started.*Price will vary slightly based on your own personal program. Then all that is left is your own grocery shopping and we even supply the meal plans and recipes.
Dr Shalviri is available for a complimentary 15 minute consultation if you'd like more information before getting started or help with determining if this is the best option for your health goals.
Please call reception for more information or to book in for an appointment with Dr Shalviri.

Acupuncture and Detoxification
Acupuncture can aid you through the entire process of detoxification.
Through Acupuncture the circulation of blood and lymphatic fluid is enhanced. Both play a crucial role in the transportation of toxins and wastes for elimination in our bodies. Acupuncture not only helps in stress reduction and provides relief from chronic pain, it also helps to improve the functions of your body's organs.
It can help to improve the digestive system, a major player in body detoxification. It can stimulate the functions of the Kidneys, to help detoxification of blood through urination. The Liver is one of our major detox organs. In TCM this organ is associated with stress. Thus supporting Liver functions with Acupuncture can help to eliminate both, mental and physical wastes. With every breath you take you detox your body through Oxygen. Strengthening your Lungs function with Acupuncture will consequently improve cell metabolism and help us to breath out metabolic wastes. Furthermore according to TCM the Lung controls the skin. The skin, our largest organ, plays a major role in detoxification through the pores.
It is clear that acupuncture can help to improve performance, boost confidence, cleanse the body of toxins, and provide support during times of detox. Studies have consistently shown the efficacy of acupuncture for detoxification.
Be well!

Custom Orthotics by Footmaxx,
prescribed by your Chiropractor
Foot care is one of the fastest growing, yet most neglected, areas of healthcare today. The incidence of foot problems increases with age, making this issue timely and important to baby boomers and especially those who suffer from diabetes. As well the popularity of high heels makes this an interesting topic for women as they suffer from four times as many foot problems as men.
Metascan™, a computerized gait and pressure analysis system from Footmaxx, is an innovative diagnostic tool that analyzes foot function when a patient stands, walks or runs across a mat. The result is a computerized gait analysis report that provides a thorough clinical assessment to help the doctor prescribe custom orthotics - literally within minutes. We can also take a casting of your feet if your extended health requires that.
Orthotics have several uses both for the treatment and prevention of foot problems, especially among diabetics who sometimes can avoid lower extremity amputations with annual screening and gait analysis. As well, abnormal foot function can lead to ankle, leg, knee, hip and even lower back problems.
Our Chiropractors Dr Flatt and Dr Kusch are available to book in for your gait scan at any time during usual office hours or come out to our Open House on Saturday April 16th from 12-2pm for a complimentary scan.
Custom Orthotics
Patient Testimonial
After suffering from a sore hip and feet for months, I sought treatment from Dr Flatt. My hip pain always returned a few days after each visit, and I was growing a painful bunion on the outside of my foot. The solution - throw out my old orthotics and order a new pair of Footmaxx orthotics. For me, the results were immediate. The pain in my hip disappeared completely, and I am feeling less stress on my back and feet. I no longer feel pain every time I take a step. I have increased my activity level, and am back to enjoying what I like to do.
Thanks,
Mary K March 2011

Buy Local, In-Season Fruits and Vegetables
Local, in-season produce is one of life's joys. It's easy to prepare, often needing only a wash before eating out of hand. And it's usually the most affordable way to buy fresh vegetables and fruit.Buying local also helps to build a sustainable community food system, which can improve the health of the community, the natural environment and individuals.

If you're not sure where to buy the freshest local produce, try:
- Local farmers' markets/farm stands: these offer a wide variety of locally grown, seasonal produce. They also give you an opportunity to talk to the people who produce your food - and a visit to the market is a great family outing.
- Pick your own: many farms offer you the chance to pick your own at a lower rate than the picked price. It's a great way to get some exercise along with good local food.
- Community gardens give you a chance to grow your own vegetables and fruit - even if you live in a condo or apartment. Get your own plot or share with other people.
Here's a handy reference for what's in season, some recipes and local markets.

What can you do if you've tried every conceivable way that you know of to heal an injury or relieve pain?
Acupuncture
Patient Testimonial
"Alexandra has applied acupuncture on me many times. She has helped me with pains in my shoulder, my thumb and knee. The pain in my knee is related to arthritis, which also makes my knee joint swollen. Many times when I came to see Alexandra I felt discomfort and weakness in my knee, but after every treatment I was able to walk much better and with less pain.
Most recently I came to see Alexandra after I injured my arthritic knee due to a very bad fall accident. My knee was extremely swollen and painful. I was not able to bend the leg or to put any weight on it. Already after the first acupuncture session I felt a huge improvement! When I got up the next morning, I nearly couldn't believe how much the pain and swelling were decreased. Only 2 more treatments and one week later I was able to go back to work. Even my doctor and my physiotherapist were a stunned by such a fast healing response.
Thanks to Acupuncture and Alexandra's good care I was able to return to work more quickly, I experienced less pain and healed much faster than expected.
I enjoy my visits with Alexandra and I only can highly recommend her."

Magnesium
Food Sources
Magnesium is needed for more than 300 biochemical reactions in the body. It is one of the most abundant minerals in the human body, but it cannot be manufactured by the body and must therefore be obtained through dietary sources. For every day maintenance there are several foods which provide great sources of Magnesium. Green vegetables, bean and seeds, seafood and fruits and nuts are the best sources of Magnesium.
Below are a couple of websites that I like to refer to when looking for food sources, nutrient content and overall health tips. World's Healthiest Foods Livestrong Monica Frost Wellness Coordinator Holistic Nutritionist |
