President's Message

I would like to officially open the new ASHRAE 2012-2013 Toronto Chapter year.

This is the first gazette for our Chapter Year. Please take an extra couple of minutes to review, as there is a ton of new information for all of our Chapter Members to learn about moving forward into this chapter year.

Hope you all like our new look for the ASHRAE Toronto electronic gazette! We would love to hear your feedback on it!

We have been planning a great year for you! There will be great tours of facilities, great presenters with great technologies, breakfast seminars, joint association meetings, our Decemberfest night and everyone's favourite ASHRAE Golf Tournament in June.

We will also have our world renowned Toronto ASHRAE Career Fair, which has been talked about amongst International ASHRAE Society members over the last year since we had over 1000 people attend that Career Fair day at Seneca College. We as the ASHRAE Toronto Chapter are being applauded for our success throughout society!

I am very excited to be representing our chapter and all of our Toronto ASHRAE Chapter Members this year as your President. Look forward in seeing all of you again since the golf tournament and meeting some of the new faces that I have not had the pleasure of bumping into yet.

Thanks and see you Monday October 1st, 2012!

Your President,
David Benedetti

IN MEMORIUM: Remembering Gerry Granek

GERRY  GRANEK, P.Eng  (1924-2012)

Gerry Granek, P.Eng;  ASHRAE Toronto Chapter President 1966-1967 and ASHRAE Life Member passed away in Toronto on 1 September 2012.

Gerry graduated second in his engineering class from University of Toronto and worked as a professional mechanical engineer for his whole career, initially founding the firm of G. Granek Associates.  Later he partnered with Jack Chisvin, Bernie Rubin and Gunnar Heissler, in the highly regarded ECE Group.

Some of Gerry's career highlights included the O'Keefe Centre, McMaster Medical Centre, the original "new" Mount Sinai Hospital building at 600 University Avenue, First Canadian Place (at that time the tallest office tower in Canada) and part one of Commerce Court, the Canadian Embassy in Beijing, Ontario Place, and Canada's Wonderland.

Gerry spent many years volunteering his time at the Canadian Standards Association working to improve building mechanical engineering design, especially the Z317.2 Committee for HVAC design in Healthcare Facilities, of which he was a stalwart member for many years.

In May 2012, Gerry was presented with a CSA Award of Merit (presented on behalf of CSA by Michael Keen and Lakis Ellinas) in "recognition of dedicated service, remarkable knowledge and valued influence in the areas of health care facility engineering and physical environment, and the pioneering of smoke control in high rise office buildings."

May 2012 Meeting Summary
May 2012 Dinner Presentation, ASHRAE Toronto Chapter

COMMERCE COURT WEST

Active Chilled Beam Retrofit

Arash Habibollahi, B.Eng., Smith + Andersen

The May 2012 dinner meeting featured a presentation on the active chilled beam retrofit of Commerce Court West.  The presenter was Mr. Arash Habibollahi, B.Eng. of Smith + Andersen's Mechanical Design department.  Arash has worked on a wide variety of projects including Citigroup Financial, Canadian Music Center, and Lanterra Developments Head Office.

Commerce Court was designed by world famous architect I.M. Pei and completed in 1972.  Located in the Financial District, firms such as CIBC, Blake, Cassels and Graydon, Barrick Gold, and Deloitte & Touche are the anchor tenants. With ongoing energy upgrades, the building has won many awards, such as the BOMA Office Building of the Year Award in 2009.  Presently LEED EB (Existing Building) Gold is being pursued.  The most recent retrofit involved the replacement of white perimeter induction units which lined the windows, with active chilled beams in the ceiling.  Some aspects of the active chilled beam design were higher chilled water temperatures and lower supply air volume requirements.  Before embarking on the retrofit, Arash Habibollahi and the Smith + Andersen team had the design mocked-up and tested for compliance with ASHRAE 55 (Thermal Environmental Conditions for Human Occupancy).  It was ensured that the active chilled beams could perform in heating mode in various conditions.  The result of the new energy efficient design is an overall increase in usable perimeter space.  With the bottom of the windows exposed, the interior looks more sleek and sophisticated. As well, there is increased zone controllability for future perimeter offices, and a large reduction in sound propagation.

Efficient Air-Water System Design with Chilled Beams

Ken Loudermilk, P.E, Trox Technik

The second presentation of the evening was by Mr. Ken Loudermilk, P.E, of Trox Technik. Mr. Loudermilk is an expert in chilled beam technology.  He has written many professional articles for the ASHRAE journal and other trade publications, and is currently committee chair of the ASHRAE Technical Committee 5.3 - Room Air Distribution.

Mr. Loudermilk described how to design with chilled beams and the advantages of chilled beams.  The active type of chilled beams should be selected when heating is required. The passive type is not effective for heating.  Active chilled beams provide ventilation air as well as heat or cool the room air.  The high velocity air jets create negative pressure which draws in room air.  The active chilled beam removes 60 to 70 percent of space sensible heat by water and can be combined with under floor air distribution systems.
Chilled water supply must be maintained at or above room dew point temperature since there is no drain pan.  Chilled beams can be used anywhere you can control the indoor humidity.  Chilled beams should not be used in kitchen areas, bathrooms, and other areas with low sensible heat ratios.

Active chilled beams entrain one to five parts room air for every part of primary air.   The temperature of the air they discharge into the room is about 5 to 15°F warmer than that delivered with all air systems. The total airflow to the space may also be considerably higher than all air systems. Attention should be given to the room air distribution provided by active chilled beams and its effect on local velocities and temperatures within the occupied zone.

Mr. Loudermilk explained that the major advantages of chilled beams are that they take up little space, are energy efficient, quiet, have low primary air flow requirements, and require minimal maintenance.

Viewpoint
ASHRAE Region II Chapters Regional Council (CRC)

This first gazette of every year, the viewpoint is given to the President of the Chapter.

I am not sure I remember that rule over the past years, but my Executive Board and Board of Governors were very quick to vote me to be the one to do the viewpoint for October Gazette!

For my viewpoint I would like to bring to your attention the C.R.C. that is held every year for ASHRAE Society Region II.  ASHRAE Toronto Chapter is joined at this annual conference by the following ASHRAE local Chpaters:

Windsor | London | Hamilton | Montreal | Quebec City | Halifax | Ottawa | New Brunswick/PEI

There are 9 chapters in total that meet every year in a location that rotates annualy so that each chapter is CRC host once every 9 years. The most recent CRC was held in Ottawa at Carleton University Campus.

The main reason for using the "VIEWPOINT PODIUM" is to talk about ASHRAE C.R.C. is because next year in August of 2013 we have the responsibility as a chapter to host everyone from Region II in our great city of Toronto!

You will be hearing a lot about the CRC in Toronto next August as it takes a huge amount of effort in order to put this conference together. We will as a chapter, need to have a lot of our members join the CRC Committee and become volunteers for this event.

The more people we have on the planning and execution committees for the ASHRAE C.R.C. in Toronto the easier it will be. With so many of our chapter members involved it will definitely make for a fantastic event for all of the attendees.

We as a chapter will also require the assistance of our Member's companies. We will need to ask for sponsorship and also marketing give-aways so we can include in the conference attendee welcome packages. I mention this now, as company budgets will come up for discussion in your board rooms this fall with regards to next year. The sponsorships can be big or they can be small, all of the support we can receive from our ASHRAE Member companies would be greatly appreciated and certainly go along way with the attendees of the ASHRAE C.R.C.

We look forward to hosting the ASHRAE C.R.C. for our Region as we can show everyone how great our city is and that we really are the "centre of the universe" when it comes to Canada. Perhaps we could even try to get the Capital of Canada moved from Ottawa to here in Toronto?

Thanks for your time on learning about the upcoming Toronto ASHRAE CRC August 2013.

See you soon,

David Benedetti
President ASHRAE Toronto Chapter 2012-2013

Membership Promotion
Hello and welcome back! I hope you had a good ASHRAE off-season -I know mine was a busy one.

This summer I was able to attend the ASHRAE Summer Meetings in San Antonio Texas. It was a great weekend spent 'Deep in the Heart of Texas'. I attended the Regional Training for my new role as Co-Membership Chair for the Toronto Chapter (will be serving along with Imtee Baksh). It was pretty neat to see ASHRAE members from literally all over the world - Greece, Sri Lanka, Indonesia just to name a few. You quickly realize how similar your ASHRAE experiences are - no matter where you're from. The friendships we develop with our peers and other members that continue on through our careers.

Last month I was also able to make it to the regional conference in Ottawa. It was another great opportunity to see old faces (being a former member of Hamilton and Ottawa ASHRAE Chapters) and make new friends. Awards were handed out by ASHRAE to Region II Chapters for accomplishments from last year. Toronto did exceptional in all areas - we look to continue this good work this into this ASHRAE year.

The membership committee will be looking to continue to grow our membership in Toronto. If you have any questions, or would like to pass along my contact info for anyone who is interested in more information about joining ASHRAE and our chapter, and benefits to being a member, please do so! We are looking forward to another great year. Membership will be working closer with Student Activities Chair and YEA Chair (Young Engineers 35 or younger) this year to better coordinate with our younger members as well.

***If you have not renewed your Toronto Chapter membership, please do so. You can conveniently pay dues through the ASHRAE Toronto website and the PayPal option we offer. Membership offers you discounted dinner rates at our meetings, as well as discounted rates for other events that happen throughout the year. Not to mention the secret passwords and secret handshakes (ok maybe not the last two things there)

Look forward to seeing you soon.

Marc Bertolin.
Toronto ASHRAE Membership Co-Chair

Research Promotion
Welcome to another fun and engaging Toronto ASHRAE Chapter year!

Trust everyone had a great summer and ready for another fun year of learning new technologies, meet new and old friends at the Toronto Chapter meetings.

As the past president, I roll into the Research Promotion (RP) Chair role automatically.

This year I will be learning myself and discussing with you the meaning and history of ASHRAE Research Promotion.
  1. How ASHRAE raises funds and utilizes research donations?
  2. How research can impact the industry?
  3. What projects are funded?
  4. How ASHRAE research donations can be tax deductible in Canada?
  5. Investments and donations go directly to research in Canada.
  6. Why should you contribute?
  7. How ASHRAE acknowledges and recognizes the contributors?
  8. What is the range of contributions?
  9. Who supervises ASHRAE Research?
  10. Where is ASHRAE research conducted?
  11. Does ASHRAE support Student research?
By the end of the year, hopefully, we will all understand Research Promotion a bit better.

Last year, Toronto Chapter met its RP goal of $29,000.00 with our total contributions of $31,165.00. An award was given to our Chapter for our efforts at the recent Chapter Regional Conference (CRC) held in Carleton University, Ottawa this past August.

Thank you to all contributors for our success.

The Chapter will be sending out acknowledgements to the contributors very shortly.

PAOE
PAOE or Presidents Award Of Excellence, provides the chapters in Region II with a means of measuring success across a wide range of chapter operations.   It is meant as a tool to guide the Board of Directors and Committee Chairs towards their goals.

Below are the final PAOE results from the 2011-2012 ASHRAE Calendar Year. As you can see we had a very successful year.  Congratulations must go out to David Benedetti for his tireless efforts in posting points and to all of our Chapter's commitee chairs for their hard work.

Sincerely,

Glenn Kilmer
President-Elect
ASHRAE Toronto Chapter"

YEA

The great success of YEA continues! Previous years have included everything from technical tours to pub crawls, all of which are of equal importance.  Keep an eye out for our first YEA event in late October. We plan on kicking off this year at a fine local pub while involving some of our student members.

We're keeping up with the tradition of sending YEA members to the ASHRAE Leadership weekend. Three YEA members including myself, attended the leadership weekend last fall in Atlanta. It's a great excuse to get out of Toronto. ASHRAE does a good job with the accommodations (especially the food!)  The plan is to send 2 or 3 members this year to the spring session which is being held in Vancouver. If you are a YEA or Student member and are at all interested, never hesitate to send an email directly to myself!

There is also the opportunity for outstanding YEA members to attend the ASHRAE winter conference. The application deadline is fast approaching (mid October) so check out the website for details. They are selecting 4 YEA members and picking up the tab. See the website or email me for details on how to apply.

It's important as a YEA member to stay in touch. You might be sitting in the office right now, surrounded by a group of elders... when in reality there are many young people in Toronto with goals and aspirations similar to yours. All the cool people in ASHRAE make it their new-year resolution to attend at least two YEA events every year - Looking forward to meeting you at our first pub night in October.

Michael Genin
2012-2013 YEA Committee Chair

Student Activities
Hello World!

I would like to introduce myself - Michael McEvenue, at your service! I am a recent graduate and previous student branch president, and I am now the Student Activities Chair for the Toronto Chapter. There are lots of things to learn about ASHRAE and I am here to get you moving in the right direction!

If you are new to ASHRAE and you find yourself reading the Gazette - Congratulations! You have just increased your odds of becoming a committee member in the next few moments...want to know a trade secret? Just say yes. That's it. Y-E-S or alternatively, you can say YEA! We take many forms of yes at the Toronto Chapter; in the form of donations to ASHRAE Canadian Research, joining a committee you just heard of, or maybe jumping down a 3-story-high slide (true story!)...however you do it - we will support you!

If you are a hardened veteran of 1 year experience and you have returned for another year as a student - and non of the above makes any sense to you...Congratulations on reading the Gazette! And for your curiosity! Asking questions is important (never forget that), but attending the Toronto Chapter meetings is even more important! You will learn all this and so much much more, and here are some tips:

Rules of Engagement:
  1. Say yes: then make sure your tray is in the upright position and your seatbelt is on...
  2. Sharing is caring: knowledge, contacts, experience and especially high fives.
  3. Ditch the buddy system: although proven useful in engineer filled environments - studies show that only 1 in 2 student members survive their first meeting with their buddy; and there is 1 to 1 odds that a brave student who attends alone thrives 60% of the time, every time...
  4. FACT: The more meetings you attend the exponentially cooler and smarter you become.
  5. Everyone you meet has a story.
  6. OMG: ASHRAE has more acronyms than there are numbers in the alphabet - exactly - too many to possibly count. ASHRAE, although being a great name for a type of tree - is in fact an acronym. There will be a prize for the first person to find me on Oct 1st; you must stand on one foot while touching your nose and tell me what ASHRAE stands for...
  7. Everyone is your friend - you just need to meet them...
  8. YEA is what everyone says when they graduate but it is also what they become.
  9. A Distinguished Lecturer (aka 'DL') is like a Yoda of HVAC. Listen you must, young padawans.
  10. Be there on Oct 3rd @ Ryerson University. See below:

Special Guest Presentation:

Date: October 3rd
Time: 9am - 11am
Lecturer: The distinguished Dan Int-Hout
Presentation: The "Effective Room Air Distribution"
Location: Ryerson University@ The Oakham house. The event will be posted on website soon - details to follow. (Light sabers optional)

Student Branch Presidents & Faculty Advisors:
If I have not contacted you yet - please email me ! Please provide me your name, school, faculty advisor/student branch president information and your goals for this year! Look forward to hearing from all of you!

Want to join the SA Committee?
That was a rhetorical question - everyone wants to join! But if you are serious and have some time to work with the team, we would be happy to have you aboard. Please email me  - indicate who you are and your interest in joining the committee. Thanks!

All the best,

Michael McEvenue
