From the PTO Co-Presidents
Thanks to all that came out to Mad Italian last Monday evening. Your support of this spirit night added over $400 to the PTO budget - more money for us to put toward assisting the teachers in educating our children.
We had a great turnout for our International Walk to School Day. Thank you parents for your participation in walking with your kids to school. Thanks also to Dunwoody High School's Pep Band for helping welcome our DES families to the school that morning and to 11Alive for publicizing our event. A big shout out to our chair of Safe Routes to School, Rosemary Gorham, and her committee for handing out the incentives to the walkers, tallying the participation and coordinating the presentation of the Gold Sneaker Award. We couldn't do it without you.
Thanks to Jan Jay for kicking off the Environmental/Recycling committee efforts for the school year. From setting up a paper recycling program throughout the school to collecting and recycling old cell phones, Jan has done a great job minimizing our footprint on the Earth. If you have interest in joining this committee, please contact janjayrd@yahoo.com.
This week's reminders:
- No school on Monday so enjoy the long weekend.
- As you know testing begins Tuesday for some of the grades. Please make sure your child gets a good night's sleep and is fed a healthy breakfast before coming to school on these days.
- Chick-fil-A Spirit Night is Tuesday evening. Remember to say "DES" when ordering at the drive thru or inside counter.
- We have another opportunity for the mandatory Volunteer Reporter Training on Wednesday at 1:45 p.m. Please plan to attend this session or another school's in the DeKalb County School District if you have not received your training already.
- Our book fair begins on Wednesday morning. You can check out the selection of books available for purchase each morning and afterschool, Wednesday through Friday. Your purchases will also help us build our library of books available at the school.
- Don't forget to join us for our 2nd annual Fall Family Dinner with food from Mad Italian. You can go to our link at http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0E4DA4AB2DA75-fall to RSVP. The fee of $2 per person 6 and older may be paid at the door.
Last, parents - please send children to school with a water bottle if you do not already. The children need to get more water in their day so we'd like them to have water easily accessible. Thanks!
See you at the school,
Shari Wassell and Amy LeVasseur

Training on Child Abuse Reporting
Mandatory Volunteer Training:
As of July 1, 2012, Georgia law states that all school volunteers are now MANDATED REPORTERS and are required to report any suspected child abuse or neglect. Therefore, DES volunteers must be trained in the procedures for reporting. All DES parent volunteers are asked to attend one of two available brief training sessions to learn more about this very important responsibility. You will be logged for your attendance and besides getting your required training, you will get a full hour toward your volunteer hours. Please plan to attend.
Wednesday, October 10, 1:45 - 2:15pm (NOTE: New time)
Please RSVP at the following sign up genius link:
www.SignUpGenius.com/go/10C0E4DA4AB2DA75-mandated
Parents are also able to get their required training by attending any DeKalb County School session. We will continue to advise you of these other school sessions as we are informed.

Proceeds from the book fair are used to fund school events, add to classroom libraries and to provide reading instruction for the entire school.

We are seeking enthusiastic volunteers to work as helpers and cashiers for 1 hour shifts in the morning (Thursday and Friday, 7:00-8:00 am), or 2 hour shifts after school (between 2:00-5:00 pm Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday as well as 6:00-8:00 pm on Family Night). Bus Driver Appreciation Day
School bus drivers carry our most precious cargo to and from school every day so it's time to tell them THANK YOU! Monday, October 15 is the Official Georgia School Bus Driver Appreciation Day, so take a moment and tell those hard working drivers, thank you.
We will recognize them and have gifts for them on DES Staff Appreciation Day in April, so a homemade card, a smile, and some kind words of thanks are all you need for this day. |
Benchmark Assessments
New this year, DeKalb County School District is requiring all schools to administer a benchmark assessment to students in grades K-5. During the window of October 3-17, students will take a brief, computerized test that will assess the pace of instruction for the first 9 weeks of school. The test is non-graded and is simply a tool for informing instruction in the classroom. Administration of benchmark testing will occur at 9 week intervals throughout the year. |
International Walk to School Day Results
Thank you to everyone who helped make International Walk to School Day on Wednesday such a success!
Everyone loved having the Dunwoody High School pep band greet the students and parents as they arrived and 11Alive did a live feed on the morning highlighting our school.
We had over 400 students accompanied by their parents walk or bike to school on that morning. Our walking school buses were also a huge success! There were many comments on how great it was to see the walking school bus in action coming down the road! Please consider taking advantage of one of our walking school buses for upcoming Walk to School Days if you have not already.
Ms. Drennan's kindergarten class won the Gold Sneaker Award with 77% participation! The announcement of the winning class was made Thursday during the WDES morning news. The winners in each grade level were Ms. Johnston in Pre-K, Ms. Goodwin in 1st grade, Ms. Mach in 2nd Grade, Ms. Mendel in 3rd Grade, Mr. Unger in 4th Grade and Ms. Soucy in 5th Grade.
Thank you to all of the volunteers that made the Walk to School event such a success!
Our next Walk to School day is November the 7th. We look forward to seeing you on upcoming walk to school days!

Message from the Dunwoody Rotary Club
Calling all Runners!
Rotary Club of Dunwoody appreciates the support and participation of your school in the upcoming RunDunwoody on Sunday, October 21. Visit rundunwoody.net or see the attached Team Challenge Flyer for more information.
As you may be aware, the Race provides for team runners. As such the Rotary Club of Dunwoody has commissioned a Floating Trophy to be awarded to the Principal of the Elementary School with the largest group of runners. The trophy will be retained by the winning school for approximately one year and then handed over to the next winner. Please encourage your students, including their families, faculty and administrators to select your school's team when they register for the race. The Trophy will be presented later this year to the winning school's Principal. This is a friendly competition between Austin, Chesnut, Dunwoody, Hightower, Kingsley and Vanderlyn.
We are grateful for your work in our community and support of this annual event. |
