Mandatory Volunteer Training:
As of July 1, 2012, Georgia law states that all school volunteers are now MANDATED REPORTERS and are required to report any suspected child abuse or neglect. Therefore, DES volunteers must be trained in the procedures for reporting. All DES parent volunteers are asked to attend one of two available brief training sessions to learn more about this very important responsibility. You will be logged for your attendance and besides getting your required training, you will get a full hour toward your volunteer hours. Please plan to attend.
Thursday, September 27, 8-8:30 a.m.
or
Wednesday, October 10, 2:30-3 p.m.

Input Needed for DCSD Proposed School Calendars
The first, a traditional calendar, reflects a start date of Aug. 12 and an end date of May 23. DCSD has historically adopted the traditional calendar model.
The second, a balanced calendar, begins the school year on Aug. 5 and ends on May 29, but has an additional week of vacation in each semester.
Both calendars have 180 school days for the students and an additional 10 days for the teachers, comprised of nine work days and four two-hour teacher conference nights.
Among other considerations is a weekly one-hour early release in order to allow for professional development for all teachers and administrators.
The calendars will be available for public comment until Sept. 26. Community members may also participate in a brief survey to gauge the level of support for each calendar as well as the early release day. The proposed calendars can be viewed at the links above. To participate in the survey, click here. The survey also is available in Spanish here.

Carpool Traffic Tip
Are you tired of the backup related to going westbound on Womack in the morning after dropping your students off at DES? Well, here's a time-saver tip you can try when the westbound lane of Womack (towards the high school) is really backed up! - Leaving DES, make a right onto Womack Road.
- At the stoplight by the college, make a right onto Tilly Mill Road.
- At the next light, make a right onto N. Peachtree Road.
- Make a quick right onto Peeler Road (if you pass the Brook Run entrance you missed your turn).
- At the stoplight at the end of Peeler Road you can do one of the following:
- To I-285: go straight through the light, the road will change names to Chamblee-Dunwoody and this will take you to I-285.
- To Mt. Vernon Road: make a right at the light onto Chamblee Dunwoody Road.
