Message from our Principal

Our cafeteria is undergoing some changes, so I appreciate your patience with the lunch menu.  Our district has dropped Sysco as the food service provider, and the new company is experiencing some challenges with getting orders accurate and out in a timely manner.  The cafeteria staff sometimes has to make menu adjustments to compensate for the food order shortages. Also, the new company does not have a contract with Blue Bell, so we do not currently have an ice cream vendor.  When we do acquire a vendor, we will sell ice cream on Fridays.  I'm so sorry for any inconvenience, and I do hope the issues will be resolved soon.

Thanks,
Jennifer
From the PTO Co-Presidents

Here is the winning number from the raffle drawing on Tuesday evening this past week: #821236

If you have this number on your raffle ticket, please contact shariwassell@gmail.com to claim your prize.  We were able to draw the winner on Thursday evening.  Congratulations to Wendy Steck! Each winner will receive a one-year membership to the Marcus Jewish Community Center. The winner may not currently be a member of the MJCCA.  If you are a member and your number was drawn, please let us know so that we can draw another number. Tuesday night's winner will have until Friday, September 14 to claim their prize.  After that we will draw another number and publish it in next Sunday's Tiger Talk.

Thank you to all the parents that attended the PTO Membership Meetings and Curriculum Nights.  If you missed it, PTO members approved the PTO budget and heard a wealth of information from the PTO, school council and our Principal, Mrs. Sanders.  Our specials teachers also spoke about their curriculum plans prior to all parents going to their child's classroom to hear from the teacher.  We hope if you attended that you agree it was a very informative evening.

We are continuing to collect cell phones in the front lobby so please drop yours off in the basket so that we can redeem it for cash.  This money will help support the many programs and activities the PTO plans to host this year.

Dads - don't forget to attend our All Pro Dads program on Friday but please let us know your attendance by reserving your spot at the link below.  Thanks!

Have a great week and see you at the school,

Shari Wassell & Amy LeVasseur, PTO Co-Presidents

Your child's artwork could be on the cover of this year's DES Directory! Below are rules for the contest:

  1. Any currently enrolled K-4th grade student may submit a design (one per student).
  2. Please use one sheet of plain white 8 ½ x 11 copy paper (portrait style). You can use any color ink pens or color markers to create your design.
  3. Please leave a 1/2" white space margin around all four sides of your design so that it will print properly.
  4. The theme is "Tiger".
  5. Include "Dunwoody Elementary School" or "DES" in your design, along with the school year (2012-2013).
  6. Please be sure to write your name, grade and teacher on the lower right hand corner of your design (but not in the white margin).

CurriculumNightsPicture Day

Say "CHEESE"!!! Picture Day is on Wednesday morning, September 12th for all individual photographs of students and staff!!

Make sure you get the best pictures possible by dressing your child appropriately. Solid colors in medium to dark tones photograph the best. Try to avoid all white, large patterns or pastel colors which may draw attention to the outfit instead of the child! The proofs and order forms will be returned in your child's TIP folder in the weeks following Picture Day.
***Class photos will be taken in February.***
Please contact Christy Archibald at carchibald@comcast.net  with any questions.
All Pro Dad

Hey DES Dads, are you looking for an activity that you and your child will remember for years to come?

Is finding time to spend with your child getting harder and harder?

Do you want an hour once a month to connect with your child?

If you answered YES to the above questions, then DES has the program for you and your child.

Become an All Pro Dad at DES!!!!

All Pro Dad Dad's Day is a simple idea with a profound impact. It's a one-hour monthly breakfast held before school where fathers and their children meet with other dads and kids in the school cafeteria/media center. During this time, we will discuss a wide range of family topics, spend time together, create fun memories, and leave equipped with resources to strengthen your relationship with your child.

The program is fun and free! All you need to do is attend, and if you want to purchase breakfast, you may do so in the cafeteria by using your child's "mylunchmoney" account, cash or check ($1.50 adults, $1.15 children). If you do not have a "mylunchmoney" account, please register for one at mylunchmoney.com before the meeting.

When: FRIDAY, September 14th, 6:45 to 7:45am.
Where: Breakfast in the cafeteria, 6:45 - 7:15am; Program will begin in the media center at 7:20.

This month's topic is "Spending Time with Your Children"

It is extremely important that you RSVP by THURSDAY, September 13th by 12pm. We need to be able to plan for the appropriate number of tables, meals and materials.

Please RSVP on our chapter's website: http://www.allprodad.com/dd/2657.

To help with keeping the parking lot and carpool drop off running smoothly, please park at the Georgia Perimeter College overflow lot and walk over to DES.

See you there...
Teachers Make a Difference

The Credit Union has a "Teachers Make a Difference" nomination. Parents can go to www.georgiaunitedcu.org  and click on "nomination form" to nominate teachers they feel have made a difference. Walk to School Day

Thank you to everyone who helped make Dunwoody Walk to School Day on Wednesday such a success! We had over 400 students accompanied by their parents walk or bike to school on that morning. Our walking school buses were also a huge success! There were many comments on how great it was to see the walking school bus in action coming down the road! Please consider taking advantage of one of our walking school buses for upcoming Walk to School Days if you have not already.

Ms. Kasser's 3rd Grade class won the Gold Sneaker Award with 60% participation! The announcement of the winning class was made Thursday during the WDES morning news. The winners in each grade level were Ms. Johnston in Pre-k, Ms. Drennan and Ms. Shelton in Kindergarten (tie), Ms. Nettles in 1st Grade, Ms. Mach in 2nd Grade, Ms. Nugent in 4th Grade and Ms. Soucy in 5th Grade.

Thank you to all of the volunteers that made the Walk to School event such a success!

Our next big Walk To School event is October 3rd for International Walk to School Day.

We look forward to seeing you on upcoming walk to school days!

Appeal for Media Center Volunteers

Looking for a way to get involved in school a few hours a month?  Come help out in the Media Center.  Our primary role is to help Ms. Gurin, the media specialist, with the re-shelving of books. Due to DeKalb County budget cuts, she no longer has an assistant this year, so our help is vital to keeping the media center running smoothly. She needs help for 1 hour each day. Typically, you will help from 11:30 AM- 12:30 PM, but we can be flexible with the time.

Fall Day Volunteers Needed

We need volunteers for FALL DAY which has been changed from October to November 1st and 2nd. We are looking for people who can help at the stations for 2 hr shifts.

If anyone knows of, or is a parent that would like to participate and run a science or math related station, that would be great! The more volunteers we have the better it will be for the children to get outside and enjoy science.

All Volunteers

This year we are challenging all parents to volunteer in the school or at home a minimum of 10 hours per semester.  We have 2 different ways to track your hours, so choose the one that is best for you:

1- Through our PTO website and
2- handwritten in notebooks kept in the front office.

To log your hours online, please go to the PTO website (www.dunwoodypto.com) and under "Get Involved" choose the "Log Volunteer Hours" link and input all of the requested information.  Front office notebooks should be in place soon.  Please only log your hours in one place or the other, no need to do both.  We will have small recognition prizes for those (excluding board members) that meet the minimum.  Any questions, please contact merriebouton@yahoo.com.  Thank you!

Check out the Get Involved pages on the PTO Website for ways to help out at your school!

Volleyball Clinic

Calling all 4th - 8th grade girls interested in playing volleyball!

The Dunwoody Volleyball Team is sponsoring our fall Junior Wildcat Volleyball Clinics from 6:00-7:30 on September 10, 12, 17, 19, 24 and October 1 at the Peachtree Charter Middle School Gym.  Many of the girls on the Dunwoody Varsity volleyball team started playing in the Junior Wildcat program! Our sessions are designed to teach proper volleyball mechanics in a fun, safe, and learning environment.   We will utilize individual and group drills and competitions to maximize reps while giving quality feedback and challenging you to improve and learn.   The training environment will challenge the kids to do their best in every drill and skill because we believe that there is no substitute for hard work and a great attitude.   Our training environment also provides a ton of individual attention for overall skill improvement.   The sessions are led by Brent Bridger - a former GA Tech volleyball assistant coach and Dunwoody volleyball players.

To register or get more information contact Steve Goldin at (770) 330-5532 or email: sgoldin106@aol.com.   The cost is $95 for the 6 sessions.
