From the PTO Co-Presidents
We hope you are having a nice long, holiday weekend.
Did you notice the change to our weekly Tiger Talk e-newsletter? You can now "jump" to the articles within the newsletter and we put the calendar right at the top for faster reference. We hope you agree that it is easier to read whether doing so on your home computer or your smart phone. Thank you Cara Engel our Tiger Talk editor and webmaster for expertly managing both of these important communications tools and updating the content and design on each. Also thanks to Jeanne Sacks and Susan Harper, last year's webmasters, and Brennan Robison. Happy reading!
There are many wonderful activities at the school this week to help you get involved and to help you get to know more about your child's school and friends. From the PTO Membership meetings and Curriculum Nights to Wednesday's walk to school day, we look forward to seeing you at the school.
Shari Wassell & Amy LeVasseur

From the Recycling / Environmental Committee
Our committee is collecting old cell phones on Tuesday, September 4 & Thursday, September 6. When you come to the school for the PTO Membership meetings, please remember to bring your old cell phones with you. These phones will be recycled and DES will receive cash back based on the type of phone. So, dig through your drawers and closets and bring your cell phones this week to the school. We will continue to collect your old phones throughout the school year if you don't have a phone to offer at this time. Thanks for helping raise money for the school.

LIKE us on Facebook
If you are a Facebook user, please "Like" Dunwoody Elementary School. Our school's new page will be used to promote upcoming school events and communications. We will also allow comments from our DES community but through daily monitoring we will remove anything that is not appropriate. We're excited about this new opportunity to share all the good things happening at our school. |
Teachers Make a Difference
The Credit Union has a "Teachers Make a Difference" nomination. Parents can go to www.georgiaunitedcu.org and click on "nomination form" to nominate teachers they feel have made a difference. The Credit Union is picking one winner per week (for 4 weeks) for cash prizes and one grand prize winner. The deadline is Friday, September 21st. Parents can nominate teachers that their children have had in the past or current teacher (as long as they are still teaching). The person nominating or the teacher does not have to be member of the Credit Union.

Walk to School Day
Dunwoody Elementary will be participating in Dunwoody Walk to School Day on Wednesday, September the 5th. Put on your walking shoes and walk to school (or ride your bike)!
You may either walk/bike your own route to school or meet us at one of the following places and join one of our "walking school buses" to walk to school as a group. Please note that these are not drop off walking school buses. It is necessary for parents to walk with their children or make arrangements with another adult to do so. We will leave from the following locations:
Kingswood United Methodist Church 5015 Tilly Mill Road
Please meet at 7:05am Parents should start walking at 7:15 am. promptly
Vermack Swim & Tennis Club
4756 Vermack Road Please meet at 7:05 am Parents should start walking at 7:15am promptly
Both of these routes will take approximately 20 mins.
Due to safety concerns and a lack of a sidewalk on the route, we will not have a walking school bus from Village Mill Swim/Tennis Club as we had last year.
If you are unable to use one of our walking school buses or make the walk from your house, please park in the GPC parking lot next door to the school and walk into the school grounds that way. Please do not park on surrounding residential streets. This creates a safety hazard and restricts access for the residents living on these streets and for emergency vehicles.
There will be extra pedestrians on the sidewalk in the morning. Remember pedestrians should always have the right of way.
All children who walk will receive a small reward that morning.
New this year! We will tally walkers in the classrooms. The classroom with the most walkers will receive the Golden Sneaker Award.
The event will be held rain or shine!
If you need more information or would like to help out on the morning please email Rosemary Gorham at rosemary_gorham@hotmail.com |
DES Directory
The DES Directory committee is hard at work finalizing your data! If you did not input your information in the computer at Registration, you can do so Curriculum Night! This is the last chance before directories go to print.
Laptop computers will be set up in the lobby area of the school. If you want to be included in the DES 2012-13 Directory, please stop by and enter your information.
DES Directory is starting from "scratch" this year - even if you were in last year's Directory, you need to RE-ENTER your information.
If you did enter your information at Registration, please do not enter a second time.
Thanks so much! We want everyone that is interested to have the opportunity to be listed in the Directory. |
Directory Cover Art Contest
Your child's artwork could be on the cover of this year's DES Directory! Below are rules for the contest:
- Any currently enrolled K-4th grade student may submit a design (one per student).
- Please use one sheet of plain white 8 ½ x 11 copy paper (portrait style). You can use any color ink pens or color markers to create your design.
- Please leave a 1/2" white space margin around all four sides of your design so that it will print properly.
- The theme is "Tiger".
- Include "Dunwoody Elementary School" or "DES" in your design, along with the school year (2012-2013).
- Please be sure to write your name, grade and teacher on the lower right hand corner of your design (but not in the white margin).
- Turn in your design by Tuesday, September 11th. You can send artwork through the TIP or hand it to your homeroom teacher.
The winner will be voted on by the Directory Committee.

Your 2012-2013 DES Tiger Fund is off to a great start! The Tiger Fund is the primary fundraiser for the DES PTO. It's an easy way to raise funds for our school - no wrapping paper or candy to sell; no bothering your friends and neighbors to sponsor your children. Best of all, every dollar contributed stays at DES. In addition, your contribution is 100% tax deductible and many employers will even match your contribution! With contributions over $28,000 to date, we are currently over a third of the way to our goal of raising $75,000. Don't delay; make your contribution today!
The suggested donation amount is $125 per family. We are, however, looking for 100% participation by all families at DES, so please contribute at a level with which you are most comfortable. Please include the bottom portion of the Tiger Fund flyer with your contribution if you have it available.
You can make your donation online; drop your donation in the large, secure, wooden mailbox marked "Tiger Fund" just inside the entrance to the school; or you may mail contributions to the school at the following address:
Dunwoody Elementary School
Attn: Tiger Fund
1923 Womack Drive
Dunwoody, GA 30338
For more information about the Tiger Fund and other ways to help our school, please visit the PTO Website.

Ways to Help Your School
If you are a Target Credit Card, Target Visa Credit, or Target Debit Cardholder, go to https://www-secure.target.com/redcard/tcoe/home, and enroll your card in the Take Charge of Education program. Target donates 1% of your card purchases made in store and at Target.com; 1/2% to purchases made outside the store with the Target Visa Credit Card. There are just 20 DES REDcard holders currently enrolled, so please enroll and make your purchases support our school! Search DES by zipcode or by our School ID: 152367.
Remember to indicate DES to the cashier each time you make purchases at Office Depot stores. As part of their 5% Back To Schools Program, Office Depot gives back, in the form of Office Depot Merchandise Cards, 5% of qualifying purchases to DES. Forgot to indicate our school when making your recent back-to-school purchases? Simply bring your receipt back to the store and credit will be applied to DES!

Appeal for Media Center Volunteers
Looking for a way to get involved in school a few hours a month? Come help out in the Media Center. Our primary role is to help Ms. Gurin, the media specialist, with the re-shelving of books. Due to DeKalb County budget cuts, she no longer has an assistant this year, so our help is vital to keeping the media center running smoothly. She needs help for 1 hour each day. Typically, you will help from 11:30 AM- 12:30 PM, but we can be flexible with the time.

Fall Day Volunteers Needed
We need volunteers for FALL DAY which has been changed from October to November 1st and 2nd. We are looking for people who can help at the stations for 2 hr shifts.
If anyone knows of, or is a parent that would like to participate and run a science or math related station, that would be great! The more volunteers we have the better it will be for the children to get outside and enjoy science.

All Volunteers
This year we are challenging all parents to volunteer in the school or at home a minimum of 10 hours per semester. We have 2 different ways to track your hours, so choose the one that is best for you: 1- through our PTO website and 2- handwritten in notebooks kept in the front office. To log your hours online, please go to the PTO website (www.dunwoodypto.com) and under "Get Involved" choose the "Log Volunteer Hours" link and input all of the requested information. Front office notebooks should be in place soon. Please only log your hours in one place or the other, no need to do both. We will have small recognition prizes for those (excluding board members) that meet the minimum. Any questions, please contact merriebouton@yahoo.com. Thank you!
Here are some other opportunities for you to help your school by Volunteering:
